What is light?

 Lets Find it out………..

We know this world largely by the sense of
sight.

Help me out to identify these objects.

How these senses are produced ?

 These senses are produced due to the chemical reaction that starts in our eyes and brain
when we see these images.
 Similar senses are produced when you see a river, a plant, a mountain, an animal or
anything which you see with your eyes.
 So now we can say

Light is a form of energy that gives us a sense of

sight.
What makes Things
Visible?
 We will answer this question by asking ourselves a question.
 Can we see objects in dark?

 It means that eyes alone cannot see any object.

 It is only when light from an object enters our eyes that we see the object.
 The light may have been emitted by the object, (like sun, monitor screen, bulb etc. )
 or may have been reflected by it, (like moon, pen, walls , plants, etc.)

Lets Talk more about Reflection…….

Reflection

When a polished or a shiny surface

changes the direction of light that
falls on it, this phenomenon is known
as Reflection.

 Can we tell in which direction the light falling

on a surface will be reflected?
Lets find out…

Laws of Reflection
 1st Law
Angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection.

 2nd Law
The incident ray, the normal at the point of incidence and the reflected ray all lie in the
same plane.
Types of reflections

Regular reflection
Refraction

Refraction is the change in the

direction of a wave passing from
one medium to another.
Causes of refraction
Change of Speed Results in Change in Direction

The speed of light is different in different medium.

As light travels from one medium to other its speed
changes.

 When light travels from a less dense substance to a

denser substance, the refracted light bends more
towards the normal line.
 When light travels from air into glass, the light
slows down and changes direction slightly.

Laws of Refraction

 1st law
The incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal
to the interface of two transparent media at the
point of incidence, all lie in the same plane.
  2nd law
The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of
refraction is a constant, for the light of a given colour and for the
given pair of media.
This law is also known as Snell’s law of refraction.
