nor fits perfectly in Maslow’s framework of hierarchy of needs .

FAMILISM
or
The Need to Belong to a Family or Group

• For the Filipino, all basic needs are met if you have a
family or group.

• The family in Filipino mind-set is a defense against

a potentially hostile world, an insurance against hunger
and old age, an eternal source of food, clothing
and shelter.

• All safety and security needs are met if you have a

family, thus the need of the Filipino to establish kinship
is prolific. He establishes kinship by affinity,
consanguinity and even by rituals and religious, civic
and social ceremonies.
THE UNIQUE FILIPINO HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

The Need To Be

RECIPROCATED
• This is based on “utang ng loob” value, a behaviour
wherein every service received, favor, or treatment
accomplished has something in return.

• The Filipino has a high sense of personal dignity. His

dignity and honor are everything to him, so that the
wounding of them becomes a challenge to his manhood. He
respects other people but they must also respect him.

• Positive criticism is definitely acceptable to Filipino as

long as it is done euphemistic and indirect way. Negative
criticism should be done indirectly.
THE UNIQUE FILIPINO HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

The Need To Be

RECIPROCATED
• Credit and collection in the Philippines is a problem
because of the need to be reciprocated. If the lender
should press for the repayment of the debt, he would
cause the debtor “hiya” for it would be implied that
the debtor is unwilling to repay the debt and unaware
of his obligations.

• Reciprocity value affects the Filipino concept of property.

He considers his property as public property because of the
“sakop system”.
THE UNIQUE FILIPINO HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

SOCIAL
ACCEPTANCE
• To be taken by his fellows for what he is or what they
believe him to be, and be treated in accordance with
his status.

• The Filipino needs to be socially accepted by the people

who can help him in time of need.
THE UNIQUE FILIPINO HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

SOCIAL MOBILITY
• Once the social acceptance need is satisfied, the social
mobility need arises.

• Social class is usually based on economic factors. Most

Filipinos want to make more money to climb the social
ladder.

• For the Filipino, evaluation by an authority or superior

would be welcomed but not by subordinates due to his desire
for socioeconomic mobility. The Filipino employee sees his
mobility as guaranteed if it were determined by his
superior rather than by his subordinate which can even be
a threat to his socioeconomic climb up the ladder.
THE UNIQUE FILIPINO HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

“PAGKABAYANI”
(Being a Hero)

• This is the highest of the need levels.

• “Hiya” in the broadest sense is best defined as

self-esteem.

• This is one of the most important concepts in the social

psychology of Filipino because in it are found almost
all of the aspects of the Filipino value and motivation.

• In this level of need, what is most important is the

Filipino’s image as a person per se and his achievements.
He expects to be respected and to be esteemed.
FILIPINO VALUE SYSTEM ANALYSIS
• Can be applied as a diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic
tool in the management of the home, to the recruitment of
new employee, the selection and assessment of potential
managers, training and developing.

• This is a method that can help individuals handle and solve

problems and cope with their environment

• It provides management with a new framework for

understanding human behavior. A manager knows that each
subordinate under him is different due to his value system,
thus the manager must know how to analyze his worker’s
value system.

• Application of this method can make the employees function

more responsibly to the objective of the company, while at
the same time making themselves responsible to their
employees.
