Earth is a system of
four interacting
components that
stabilizes life.

• "the blue marble"

• Different spheres
o Atmosphere
o Hydrosphere
o Geosphere
o Biosphere
Earth's Spheres
• What are the
four spheres
of Earth?
• How do these
spheres
interact?
HYDROSPHERE

Earth is sometimes
called the blue planet
or the blue marble
because of its water
component.
The hydrosphere makes up 71% of Earth
surface. Groundwater is the largest
reservoir of fresh water available to
humans.
Hydrosphere
is a dynamic
mass of water
that interacts
with each of
Earth’s
spheres
through the
WATER
CYCLE.
ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere is the thin,

life-giving gaseous envelope
of Earth.
MAJOR components
include the compounds
nitrogen and oxygen along
with the trace gases.
Variable
Components
 Water vapor –needed for
cloud formation and heat
retention.
 Aerosols –condensation
nuclei because it can absorb,
scatter and reflect incoming
solar radiation.
 Ozone –protects Earth from
harmful ultraviolet radiation
of the sun.
Layers of the
Atmosphere
is determined by the
changes in temperature
as it goes higher
Layers of the Atmosphere
• TROPOSPHERE –lowest layer; 11 km
thick; weather phenomena takes place.
• STRATOSPHERE –11 km to 48 km from
Earth’s surface; temperature increases,
presence of ozone layer.
• MESOSPHERE –temperature decreases (-
90 ˚C, coldest temperature in the
atmosphere); meteors are visible.
• THERMOSPHERE –55 km & no upper
limit; least amount of atmospheric
molecules, most high-energy radiation;
temperature increases.
It does not comprise the
visible solid layer, it also
extends to the center of
Earth

GEOSPHERE
Solid region of the
Earth
Layers
of the solid
Earth
CRUST –1% of Earth’s
volume; continental and oceanic
crust. Layers of the solid Earth
MANTLE –82% of Earth’s
volume; upper mantle and lower
mantle; upper mantle (lithosphere, 100
km above and asthenosphere, 700 km
thick); lower mantle (2100 km thick,
semisolid rocks).

CORE –densest layer;

outer core and inner core;
outer core (2260 km thick,
convection occurs,
responsible for the Earth’s
magnetic field); inner core
(solid, extreme pressure
because of depth).
BIOSPHERE
It is the biological
component of Earth
ANTHROPOSPHERE

The “human sphere”,

includes the part of
Earth that has been
modified by humans.
