contraceptive method
What do barrier contraceptive methods do?

Barrier contraceptives do exactly what the word suggests. They

provide a physical barrier between the sperm and the egg.

If sperm is prevented from meeting an egg, they cannot start to

create a baby.

Barrier methods of contraception are objects or medicines that block

the sperm and help prevent pregnancy.

Some barrier methods can also help prevent the spread of sexually
transmitted infections (STIs).
The types of barrier
contraceptive methods

• There are three broad groups of barrier contraception:

• Condoms (also known as sheaths). These are placed
on the man's penis before having sex. This stops the
semen from entering the woman's vagina.
• Female condoms. These are put inside the vagina, and
form a barrier from the sperm
• during sex.
• Diaphragms and caps. These are dome-shaped
devices which are put right at the top of the vagina
before having sex. They are rather more solid than
female condoms, with a firmer ring at the edge. Most
types come in specific sizes, and you need to see a
health professional to determine the right size for you.
Examples of barrier
contraceptive methods
• External condoms, internal condoms,
diaphragm, cervical cap and sponges.
They are inserted into the vagina before
sex and must be used every time you
have sex.

• Barrier methods. Examples include male

and female condoms, as well as the
diaphragm, cervical cap and
contraceptive sponge.
Explaining the examples of
barrier contraceptive methods

External condoms
• External condom sometimes called a
"male" condom, is a covering designed to
fit over a penis.
Internal condoms

• The internal condom is used during

intercourse to prevent pregnancy. The
internal condom is inserted deep into the
vagina just before vaginal intercourse. The
ring at the closed ends holds the pouch in
the vagina and the ring at the open end stays
outside the vaginal opening during
intercourse.
Diaphragm conceptive
method

• A rubber or silicone dome with a

firm , flexible run. It fits inside a
woman's vagina and covers the
opening of the uterus.
The cervical cap

• A small plastic dome that fits

tightly over the cervix and stays in
place by suction. It as a barrier to
keep sperm from entering the
uterus
The sponge
contraceptive
• A round device made of soft foam
that contains spermicide. It is
inserted into he vagina to cover the
cervix and keep sperm from entering
the uterus.
Advantages of the barrier contraceptive
methods
Condoms protect against pregnancy.
They also are the only method that Barrier methods are safe to use while
may protect against STIs such as breastfeeding.

These methods do not prevent pregnancy as well as IUDs or hormonal forms of birth

Barrier methods prevent pregnancy only if you use them every time you have sex.

You may have to interrupt sex to use some barrier methods of birth control.

Disadvantages of
barrier contraceptive A woman needs a doctor's prescription to get a diaphragm or cervical cap. Buying the
necessary spermicidal jelly to use with the cervical cap is difficult.

methods
The cervical cap and contraceptive sponge do not work as well as the other barrier methods
for women who have delivered a child through the vagina.

The cervical cap and diaphragm can't be used by people who are allergic to latex or by
women who have had toxic shock syndrome.

The cervical cap should not be used during a menstrual period.
