The key takeaways are that coaching helps people achieve goals through challenging questions and tools, it has been practiced for over 35 years, and specializes in areas like sports, executive, health, and relationships coaching.

Coaching originated in the 1980s when Thomas Leonard developed life planning techniques. He founded the first coach training program and helped establish industry standards through the International Coach Federation.

Common misconceptions are that coaches tell people what to do, it only helps those finding purpose, and that it is like therapy. In reality, coaching is a collaborative process focused on goal setting and personal growth.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN
HISTORY?
Thomas Leonard, an American financial planner, is generally acknowledged as the first person to
develop coaching as a profession in the mid 1980s. So we’re speaking more than 35 years!
He observed that his clients wanted more from him than just the usual tips on how to invest and
make money.
Leonard’s career gradually shifted from financial planning to full-time developing of the techniques
which were to become his coaching methodology.  At the time he called it “life-planning”.
In the early 1990's Leonard founded the first formal coach-training program.  He called it Coach
University.
Leonard was also instrumental in founding the International Coach Federation, the most
important component in the history of life coaching. It is the first to set and publish industry
standards and ethics, provide independent credentialing of coaches and accreditation of coaching
schools.
LIFE COACHING
MISCONCEPTIONS!

It takes so much time to see results
It’s only for those who are lost in their lives and don’t find their purpose
It’s only been there for the past 10 years or so!
Coaching is like Therapy!
SO WHAT IT IS COACHING?

ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative

process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
In other words, it helps people in goal-setting, personal growth, and enabling them to
achieving their goals by improving different actions necessary to take control of
future plans.
