SPINAL NERVES

SPINAL NERVE

 There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves.

 Spinal nerves are associated with the spinal cord and
nerves of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
 Spinal nerves connect the CNS to sensory receptors, muscles, and glands in all parts of
the body
Classification of spinal nerve

 Spinal nerves are numbered in groups according

to the part of the spinal cord from which they arise
CERVICAL SPINAL NERVE

 8 PAIRS
 1st pair of spinal nerves emerges from the spinal cord between the occipital bone and the
atlas.
 Spinal nerves C1 – C7 emerge from the vertebral column through intervertebral
foramina.
 Exits the vertebral canal above their corresponding
vertebra.
 Spinal nerve C8 exits vertebral canal between
C7 and T1
THORACIC SPINAL NERVE

 12 PAIRS
 They emerge from thoracic vertebrae
 Spinal nerves T1–T12 exit the vertebral canal below
their corresponding vertebrae.
LUMBAR SPINAL NERVE

 5 PAIRS
 They emerge from lumbar vertebrae
 Like thoracic nerve they exits the vertebral canal below their corresponding vertebra
SACRAL NERVE AND COCCYX NERVE

 There are 5 pairs sacral spinal nerve

 1 pair of coccyx spinal nerve
 From the spinal cord, the roots of the sacral spinal nerves (S1–S5) and the coccygeal
spinal nerves (Co1) enter the sacral canal, in the sacrum.
 spinal nerves S1–S4 exit the sacral canal via the four pairs of anterior and posterior sacral
foramina
 spinal nerves S5 and Co1exit the sacral canal via the sacral hiatus
 Cervical and thoracic spinal nerves arise and leave
at corresponding vertebra .
 Because the spinal cord are shorter than vertebra column, nerve that arise from lumbar,
sacral and coccyx region of spinal cord do not
leave the vertebra column at the same level where they exit the cord.
 The root of these spinal nerves angle inferiorly in the vertebral canal
from the end of spinal cord like wisps of hair.
These root of this nerve, collectively called cauda equina
 Typical spinal nerve has 2 connection to cord i.e.
a posterior root and an anterior root .
 The posterior and anterior roots unite to form a spinal nerve at the
intervertebral foramen.
 The posterior root contains sensory axons and the anterior root contains motor axons so ,a
spinal nerve is classified as a mixed nerve.
 The posterior root contains posterior root ganglion in which cell bodies of sensory
neurons are located.
BRANCHES

 From the root, after passing the intervetebral foramen, a spinal nerve divide into several
branches.
 Theses branches are called rami (ramus) ; posterior (dorsal) ramus and anterior (ventral)
ramus.
 Posterior (dorsal) ramus serve the deep muscles and skin of the posterior surface of the
trunk.
 Anterior (ventral) ramus serve muscles and structure of the upper and lower limbs and
the skin of the lateral and anterior surface of the trunk.
 Spinal nerve also give off a meningeal branch, where this branch reenter the vertebral
cavity through intervertebral foramen and supply the vertebra, vertebra ligament and
blood vessels of spinal cord and meninges.
 Other branches from spinal nerve are the rami communicantes components of ANS
