LESSON OBJECTIVES
After completing this lesson, you should be able to:
1. Calculate the amount of a higher strength stock
preparation required to prepare a specified amount
of a lesser strength product.

DILUTION OF STOCK PREPARATIONS
EXAMPLE PROBLEMS
ANSWER:
C1Q1 = C2Q2
(X) (2%) = (120 ml) (0.02%)
2 X = 2.4
X = 1.2 ml (answer)
DILUTION OF STOCK PREPARATIONS
b. How many grams of 14% zinc oxide ointment can be made from
one pound of 20% zinc oxide ointment?
Answer
1:2000 1 x 100 = 0.05%
2000
C1Q1 = C2Q2
(X) (10%) = (4 L) ( 0.05% )
(X) (10) = (4000 ml) ( 0.05 )
X = 200 = 20 ml

DILUTION OF STOCK PREPARATIONS
C1Q1 = C2Q2
(X) ( 1 ) = (2000 ml) ( 1 )
200 4000
(X) (0.5%) = (2000 ml) (0.025%)
20 X = 2000 ml
X = 100 ml
Practical Exercises

Example 1:
A pharmacist has a 70% alcoholic elixir and a 20% alcoholic elixir. He needs a 30% alcoholic
elixir to use as a vehicle for medications. In what proportion must the 70% elixir and the 20%
elixir be combined to make a 30% elixir?
reduced
70 % 10 10 parts of 70% 1 part of 70%
30
To make a 30% elixir, 1 part of 70% elixir is mixed with 4 parts of 20% elixir.

To make a 30% elixir, 1 part of 70% elixir is mixed with 4 parts of 20% elixir.
ALLIGATION PROBLEMS
Example 2:
In what proportion must plain coal tar be combined with a 2% coal tar ointment to
make a 4% coal tar ointment?
reduced
100% 2 1 part of coal tar
2% 96 48 parts of 2% oint.
98 49 parts of 4% oint.
1 part of plain coal tar is combined with 48 parts of 2% coal tar oint. to yield 49
parts of 4% coal tar ointment.
ALLIGATION PROBLEMS
Example 3:
How many milliliters of water must be added to 300 ml of 70% alcoholic solution to
make a 40% alcoholic solution?
reduced amount
70% 40 4 parts 300 ml
40%
0% 30 3 parts x ml
70 7 parts
Example 4:
How many milliliters of water should be added to 500 ml of a 1:200 potassium
chloride solution to make it a 1:4000 solution?
reduced amount
1 1 1 part 500 ml

20 20 parts
Therefore, 9500 ml of water should be added to 500 ml of 1:200 KCl solution to make
it a 1:4000 solution.
ALLIGATION PROBLEMS
Example 5:
A pharmacist needs an elixir that contains 45% alcohol as a vehicle for
medication. On hand, he has a 10% alcoholic elixir and a 75% alcoholic elixir.
How many milliliters of the 75% elixir must be combined to make 1000
milliliters of 45% alcoholic elixir?
reduced amount
75% 35 35 ÷ 5 = 7 part x ml
45%
10% 30 30 ÷ 5 = 6 parts y ml
65 13 parts1000 ml
Example 6:
A pharmacist wants to use 3 lots of ichtammol oint. Containing, respectively,
50%, 20%, and 5% of ichtammol. In what proportion should they be mixed
to prepare a 10% ichtammol ointment?
20% 5 parts 1
10%
5%40 + 10 = 50 parts 10
The two stronger lots may be mixed first, then be mixed with the weakest
lots
ALLIGATION PROBLEMS
Example 7:
In what proportion, 20%, 15%, 5% and 3% zinc oxide ointments may be
mixed to produce a 10% ointment?
20% 7 parts
15% 5 parts
10%
5% 5 parts
3% 10 parts
The stronger lots may be mixed first, then be mixed with the weakest lots.
ALLIGATION PROBLEMS
Example 8:
You are required to prepare 65 g of 10% Sulphur
Ointment from 15% Sulphur Ointment and
ointment base. By using Alligation method,
calculate the amount of 15% Sulphur ointment and
amount of ointment base needed to prepare 65 g of
10% Sulphur ointment.
