What Does Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Mean?

Environmental health and safety (EHS) is the

department in a company, or an organization
tasked with ensuring that the work undertaken by
the company does not cause undue environmental
damage, put the workers' health and safety at high
risk, complies with applicable legislation, and
follows best practices.

EHS aims to prevent and reduce accidents,

emergencies, and health issues at work, along with
any environmental damage that could result from
work practices.
Safeopedia Explains Environmental Health
and Safety (EHS)

Environmental health and safety departments take a

systematic and empirically informed approach to
preventing accidents and injuries. They oversee a range
of hazards, including ergonomic hazards, exposure to
carcinogens, falls from height, and heavy machinery.
The work undertaken by EHS departments is motivated
by a number of concerns:
1.The protection of workers, their health, and the
natural environment
2.Compliance with legal requirements and regulatory
standards
3.The increase in productivity, profit, and morale that
comes with a safe and healthy workforce
INCIDENT/ACCIDENT

• Near Miss: Any event where there is no any

injury , damages or any other loses.
• Incident: Any unplanned event or series of
events which causes or has the potential to
cause, bodily injuries, fire, damage to the
environment, equipment and property.
• Accident: A workplace Incident which has
caused bodily injuries to human beings,
damage to environment, property and
equipments.
• Effects of Accidents:
Injury to Person
Equipment Damage
Material Loss
Financial Loss
Loss of Business

HIERARCHY OF CONTROL
PERMIT TO WORK SYSTEM (PTW)
Non
Routine
works

A Work permit system is used to ensure safe working

by eliminating possible associated high risks such as

 General Work Permit

Working at height
 Hot works(welding, gas cutting)
 Confined space

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTS (PPE)

Definition (OHSAS): Devices used to protect an employees from injury or illness

resulting from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical,
or other workplace hazards.

The need for PPE and the type of PPE used is based on hazard present; each
situation must be evaluated independently.

PPE is the barrier between human & hazard.

PPE is used as a last resort, before to that we should look for engineering &
administrative controls for conducting risk assessment.

PPE’s should maintain in clean and hygienic condition.

PPE’s should be used as per requirement  to  protect  the  BODY  against  heat,
noise, cold,  radiations,  crashing, sharp  edges,  pointed  surfaces,  slippery surface,
high  pressures,  low  pressures,  hot  surfaces,   high  speed  particles,
infections, effects of  gases,  vapors  and  various  toxic  and  corrosive chemicals.
HEALTH MONITORING FACILITIES

Occupational health deals with all aspects of

health and safety in the workplace and has a
strong focus on primary prevention of hazards.
The health of the workers has several
determinants, including risk factors at the
workplace leading to cancers, accidents,
musculoskeletal diseases, respiratory diseases,
hearing loss, circulatory diseases, stress related
disorders and communicable diseases and
others.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Periodic Employees Health Check Up.

 Supply Sufficient amount of potable drinking
water.
 Adequate & appropriate PPE supply.
 Monitoring of First Aid Kit
 Clean & Hygienic Toilets/washroom.
 Workplace monitoring
