ABSOLUTE DATING
Absolute dating is the process of determining an age on a
specified chronology in archaeology and geology. ... Absolute
dating provides a numerical age or range, in contrast with relative
jncjncd
dating, which places events in order without any measure of the
age between events. Precise isotopic ages are called absolute
ages, since they date the timing of events not relative to each
other but as the time elapsed between a rock-forming event and
the present. Absolute dating by means of uranium and lead
isotopes has been improved to the point that for rocks. Some
examples of absolute dating include radiocarbon dating,
potassium-argon dating, and thermoluminescence.
RELATIVE DATING
Relative dating is the process of determining if one rock or
geologic event is older or younger than another, without
knowing their specific ages—i.e., how many years ago the object
jncjncd
was formed. Relative dating methods estimate whether an object
is younger or older than other things found at the site. Relative
dating does not offer specific dates, it simply allows to determine
if one artifact, fossil, or stratigraphic layer is older than another.
relative age dating has to do with determining whether one
geological or paleontological event happened before or after a
second event.
HOW IS RELATIVE DATING HELPFUL

Relative dating puts geologic events in chronological

jncjncd
order without requiring that a specific numerical age be assigned
to each event. Second, it is possible to determine the numerical
age for fossils or earth materials. Relative age estimates were
calibrated using radiocarbon to date about ... the new geologic
era of human modification of the natural world.
HOW IS ABSOLUTE DATING HELPFUL
Absolute dating methods determine how much time has passed
since rocks formed by measuring the radioactive decay of
isotopes or the effects of radiation on the crystal structure of
jncjncd
minerals. Paleomagnetism measures the ancient orientation of
the Earth's magnetic field to help determine the age of rocks.
Geologists often need to know the age of material that they find.
They use absolute dating methods, sometimes called numerical
dating, to give rocks an actual date, or date range, in numbers of
years. This is different to relative dating, which only puts
geological events in time order.
