Keep in Mind

Common community problems are the challenges, difficulties, and obstacles that the
community frequently faces. Some common examples of these problems are poverty, early
pregnancy, child abuse, crime, domestic violence, drug abuse, mismanagement of resources,
environmental issues, health issues, insufficient school funding, and police brutality.

Problems can occur in any parts of our community. There are many probable causes
wherein these may arise. To deal with it, (e.g. community problems), we ought to know how to
identify them. By taking the things listed below into consideration, we can identify the
different problems that could be present in our community—even the reasons they exist. By
that, we can think of possible solutions and action plans on how we can help our community to
control these concerns.
• Frequency – we must know how frequent the problem occurs.
• Duration – the time frame on how long the problem persists.
• Range/Scope – the number of people who have been concerned, affected, and
influenced.
• Severity – how intense or extreme the effects of the problem to the people and
community.
• Equity – how it affects people’s legal and moral rights to achieve fairness in
every situation.
• Perception – this is the opinion of the people in the community for the problem
may vary from place-to-place, links of individual experiences perceived as a
collective information can help a lot in identifying community problems.
We must always remember that there can be multiple reasons why a problem exists, so
we need to have a deeper understanding and a lot of patience and perseverance to enable us in
developing the best action in addressing a particular problem.
