BALLB/BBALLB – SEM 2
Why Affixes?
Look at the following sentences:
1. It is against the law to kill someone.
2. It is not legal to kill someone.
3. It is illegal to kill someone.
4. You require a lawful authority to possess a gun.
5. It is unlawful to possess a gun without license.
6. She is his lawfully wedded wife.
What happened there?
We look the root word law (which is devoid of any affixes) and created 5
different words out of it.
With the suffix –al – Legal
Adding the prefix il- to ‘legal’ – Illegal
Adding the suffix –ful to ‘law’ – Lawful
Adding the prefix un- to ‘lawful’ – Unlawful
Adding the suffix –ly to ‘lawful’ – Lawfully
*In each case, we have changed the form (the part of speech) and also
altered the meaning of the original word in differing degrees.
Theory
So affixes perform two interrelated functions:
1. They change the form (the part of speech) of a word
2. They alter the meaning of the word
E.g.
- Courage (Root – Noun)
- Encourage (Verb)
- Discourage (Verb with Opposite Meaning)
- Courageous (Adjective)
- Courageously (Adverb)
Method
Following the same line of thought, we will understand the topic in two ways:
1. Conversion of a word into different parts of speech
2. Creating a) Opposite and b) Altered meaning
How should you approach:
1. Identify which part of speech the given root word is in.
2. See if you can change the part of speech and attach an affix. E.g. judge –
Judgement
3. See if you can create an opposite meaning. E.g. Well
Unwell
*Give preference to more visible affixes like –ment, -ness, Un-, Dis-, Mis-
