Ancient Ghana

Ancient Ghana ruled from 300 to 1100 CE as a west African empire based in modern-day southeast Mauritania and western Mali. The empire had a feudal government led by kings called kafu who ruled territorial units. Dinga Cisse became the first Ghana warrior king and established the ruling clan. Ancient Ghana participated in regional trade of goods like gold, salt, ivory, slaves, cloth, weapons, and books and was also influenced by the spread of Islam throughout northwest Africa.

Dinga cisse became the first Ghana


(warrior king) and his clan became
the rulers of the new state. Even in
current day politics the cisse name
is prominent in politics in Mali and
Mauritania.

Ghana was known for trading lots


of goods like gold and salt but
traded many other things. Some
things they traded were ivory,
slaves, cloth, weapons, and books.
