Complex Sentences

This lesson will teach you what makes


complex sentences different from simple
and compound sentences. To check
how much you have learned from the
previous lesson, let us do the following
activity.

What is It
Read the following sentences:

1. It started to rain, so Raymond and Samuel had to run


inside.
2. Since it was raining outside, Jude brought out his
umbrella.
3. Trishia works very hard so she can be an achiever.
4. Paris became a doctor because he wanted to help
others.
5. Mylene won the contest because she trained everyday.
The sentences presented are classified as complex
sentences. A complex sentence is made up of an
independent and dependent clause. An independent
clause is a simple sentence that gives a complete
thought and can stand alone.
A dependent /subordinate clause is a clause that does
not give a complete thought, it starts with a subordinating
conjunction such as because, so, since, if, unless, after,
etc. and cannot stand alone.
The complex sentences that were presented show
cause-effect relationship. Because, so, since and if are
commonly used subordinate conjunctions. A cause Is a
reason why something happens. An effect is the
result or what happens because of something
