MOTIVATION
• In underground mine, ventilation systems are critical to supply adequate oxygen,
keeping up non-dangerous and non-lethal environments and an effective working
mine. To monitor an underground mine, can help killing high hazard environments.
• Mine accidents can have a variety of causes, including leaks of poisonous gases such
as hydrogen sulphide or explosive natural gases, especially firedamp or methane,
dust explosions, collapsing of mine stopes, toxic gases arising from mine fires,
mining-induced seismicity, flooding, or general mechanical errors from improperly
used or malfunctioning mining equipment.
OBJECTIVE
Problem Statement

• Our aim is to design a system that indicates and alerts, if any

fluctuation occurs in the levels of the parameters like temperature,
gas, humidity which may lead to fatal consequences.
• We try to implement a system which has sensors to sense the
mentioned variables and then if any variable fluctuates from the
advisable level, sends a SMS alert to the people concerned which
helps them to react quickly and take necessary steps to
prevent/rescue.

Zigbee based intelligent smart helmet for coal miners safety purpose

This paper focuses on a mine supervising system which is based on the cost effective IOT (ZigBee) system.
This project aims at developing a sensor networks, realized real-time surveillance with early-warning
intelligence on harmful gases, temperature, humidity in mining area and used ZigBee communication to
reduce potential safety problems in coal production using a ZigBee technology. All these three parameters
are detected continuously by temperature sensor, gas sensor, humidity sensor and if they cross the pre-
defined limit, then the user gets information about all three sensors and it displays on thing speaks site as
the graphs and it will automatically update the values to this site. With a Zigbee positioning devices the
system might be easily extended. The values of different sensors are continuously transmitted by ZigBee
transmitter to the remote monitoring unit which are received by Thingspeak site through IP address.

Microcontroller based smart helmet for coal miners

This paper main focus on the miners supervising system, which is based on the cost-effective wireless network. Real time
monitoring with initial warning intelligence on harmful gases, helmet removal, collision detection in mining area and RF
module used for information transfer to reduce safety problems in coal mining area for this purpose they develop smart helmet.
All these parameters are detected continuously by gas sensor, collision sensor, and helmet remover sensor and if they cross the pre-
defined limit, then the remote device gets alert as the buzzer will automatically turn on with LCD display shows the status. As
the system consisting of microcontroller transmitter and receiver the system can be easily extended. The values of different sensors
are continuously transmitted by RF transmitter to the remote monitoring unit which is received by RF receiver module.
LITERATURE SURVEY
Smart helmet for coal mines safety monitoring and alerting
This paper tends to the supervision system of miners in order to detect hazardous events that occur in the mining
environment. The problem addressed in this paper include gas poisoning, helmet removal and object fall which can
sustained a life-threatening injury. In mining industry harmful gases like SO2, CO and NO2 occurs which can cause
suffocation. Death of minors mainly causes due to object fall if proper treatment is not provided. Helmet removal is also
a dangerous. This paper tends to develop a wireless sensor network to monitor real time situation of underground mines
from base station. It gives surveillance with early warning intelligence of harmful gases. So, to detect all these, they are
using air quality sensor, accelerometer, Infra-red (IR) sensor. These are connected to the RF module. Microcontroller AVR-
ATMEG used as analog to digital converter. All sensors have some threshold value if they cross that value then buzzer
will automatically on and status will display on LCD.

Arduino based smart helmet for coal mine safety

The basic object of this paper is to design and Simulation of smart helmet for coal miners using Arduino
technology. The primary objective of this thesis is making use of smart helmet, management of accident events
can be a real- time monitoring system. This system utilizes Arduino and sensor technology to connect to the
server to transfer the specific data to the data centre In this paper we are going to use zig-bee technology and
three sensors like temperature, humidity and gas sensor. Three sensors will observe the change in environment
parameters and they will give the information to micro controller .Then Arduino will verify this values up to
date, if any of the value exceeds than rated, it will alert to person through the buzzer. This information is passed
to the base station through the zig -bee module. Then the department at the base station will take safety
precautions to safe the persons who are working in the coal mining.
BLOCK DIAGRAM
ARCHITECTURE
COMPONENTS
Arduino
Arduino is an open source hardware and software based on microcontroller which is very easy to use.
Arduino is an inexpensive control board that's easy to program and can hook up to a wide variety of
hardware.
GSM SIM900A
The SIM900 is a complete Quad-band GSM/GPRS solution in a SMT module which can be embedded in the
customer applications. Featuring an industry-standard interface, the SIM900 delivers GSM/GPRS
850/900/1800/1900MHz performance for voice, SMS, Data, and Fax in a small form factor and with
low power consumption.
DHT 11
This DHT11 Sensor measures the temperature and humidity. The sensor has greater reliability and very good
stability. A resistive-type humidity measuring component with negative temperature coefficient is used.
MQ135
The MQ series of gas sensors utilize a small heater inside with an electrochemical sensor these sensors are
sensitive to a range of gasses are used at room temperature. MQ135 alcohol sensor is a Sno2 with a lower
conductivity of clean air.
LCD
The LCD display consists of two lines, 16 characters per line that is interfaced with the
PIC16F73. It also contains a user-programmed RAM area (the character RAM) that can be
programmed to generate any desired character that can be formed using a dot matrix.
Buzzer
The buzzer is a sounding device that can convert audio signals into sound signals. It is usually
powered by DC voltage. It is widely used in alarms, computers, printers and other electronic
products as sound devices.
Power Supply/Transformer
12-0-12 1Amp Step-Down Transformer is a general-purpose chassis mounting mains
transformer. The transformer has 230V primary winding and non-centre tapped secondary
winding. The transformer has flying coloured insulated connecting leads

RESULT
S
• A prototype of smart helmet is developed to detect various types of dangerous event
such as air quality, temperature and presence of humidity more than the advisable
levels and send this dangerous event information towards the monitoring section
which provides rescue operation for the miner.
• And we get a messages on LCD screen about the surrounding atmosphere and to
phones of which were coded in Arduino using GSM module.

RESULTS
CONCLUSION
As the system requirement and the required components can be easily made
available and this project can be implemented easily. It will provide safety to coal
miners and change the way of their working, as well as system controlling the
various environmental changes in mines. It is reliable system with quick response
and easy installation.
The system might be easily extended. It will improve system stability and extend
accurate position of underground miners in the future. The designed Arduino based
smart helmet is light in weight, makes it portable. The all sensors are able to work
under drastically changing environmental conditions.
FUTURE
SCOPE

In future using additional sensors all possible safety issues could be monitored such as dust, vibration,
water leakage etc. Also we improve the data transmission distance.
The RF technology could be a low price technology compared to alternative communication systems.
The system may be increased by increasing the signal strength by inserting an extra antenna
• System is also raised by adding live equipments to measure the center beat rate, rate and force per unit
area. In future work, smart helmet-based personal PWS can be expanded by adding sensors to the
Arduino board. For example, a heart rate sensor or an alcohol sensor can be added to check the
condition of the worker. Furthermore, by adding a temperature, humidity, methane gas, and carbon
monoxide sensor, the environment at the mine site can be monitored, and when a high concentration of
harmful gases is detected, the pedestrian worker can be warned of danger.
