participating in a safety discussion
• Ask if it is safe for you to talk with them while they are
working.
• Briefly observe
• Avoid interfering with their task, i.e. handing product
unless advised.

Discussion

Starter questions:
• Can you take me through what you are doing?
• What type of safety requirements are in place
for you while carrying out this task?
• If you saw someone doing something unsafe,
what would you do?
Gather Information

• Provide the person the opportunity to share information.

If you need further information, ask:
• How can it be done differently.
• How could the change be initiated or implemented?
• Who could they speak with to have this practice
reviewed?
• Is there a process which encourages you to raise
these concerns?
•Feedback is to be specific, not general
Feedback

•Provide support without removing responsibility

•Avoid making promises you can not carry out.

•Thank the person for their time – if they are to

provide you with feedback, hand them your contact
details
What I shouldn’t do?

 Do not take notes during the observation

 Do not include name, except for recognition
 Do not just focus on negative things
 Do not use sarcasm
 Do not take aggressive attitude, don’t be rude

 Use questions to learn not to teach
