OR PRODUCED BY ARTIST
LIVING TODAY.
WHAT IS
AN ART?
ARTS ARE DESCRIBED AS MEANS OF
EXPRESSION THAT REQUIRE
IMAGINATION AND/OR SKILL IN MAKING
AESTHETIC OBJECTS OR ENCOUNTERS
THAT CAN BE SHARED WITH OTHER
PEOPLE.
THESE MAY ALSO PORTRAY IDEAS AND EMOTIONS.
USED TO ENTERTAIN OR PERSUADE OTHER PEOPLE.

THE TERM “VISUAL ARTS” RANGES FROM WESTERN-
INFLUENCED ART FORMS TO WORKS CREATED BY FOLK AND
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE.
TRADITIONALLY, THESE VISUAL ART FORMS INCLUDE PAINTING,
SCULPTURE & ARCHITECTURE.
THESE VISUAL ART FORMS HAVE DEVELOP OVER THE

CENTURIES.

LINE
This refers to prolongation of a point, or a mark on a
surface. Lines are also used to suggest dimensions, and to
guide visual movement.
The DIAGONAL
The LINE signifies
VERTICAL dynamic
LINE signifies action, conflict
or stress.

HORIZONTAL lines that are

SHAPE & MASS
This element of art refers to an area with boundaries identified or drawn using lines.
1.ORGANIC SHAPE- This shape may be based on natural or living form that can be
irregular or rounded.
2.GEOMETRIC SHAPE- This shape is based on measured forms.
SHAPE is 2-dimensional object while MASS refers to solid portions of a 3-dimensional

object.

COLOR
This refers to visual perception that allows a person to
differentiate object due to the way various wavelengths
of light are reflected. It is a very important element
because it can communicate information & emotion to
the viewer.
Color has 3 properties:
HUE- which refers to the basic or pure color, and is represented in the color wheel.
VALUE- which refers to the lightness & darkness of color. A light color or tint is the
result of adding WHITE to a hue, while a dark color or shade results from adding
BLACK to the hue.
SATURATION- which refers to brightness & dullness of color. A bright color can be
produced by adding more pigment to the same hue, while a dull color can be
produced by adding gray or the color’s complement to the pigment.
COLOR WHEEL
which is an arrangement
of primary, secondary &
tertiary colors, is an
important tool to
identify which colors can
work well if used in
certain artwork. Those
sets of colors are
referred to as color
schemes or color
relationships.
COLOR SCHEMES
1. Monochromatic- This color scheme
involves using the same hue but with
different gradients of value.
2. Analogous- it entails the use of
three or four adjacent colors in the
color wheel.
3. Complementary- It involves the use
of a color & its complement, meaning
the color located opposite of the first
color.
4. Split-Complementary-It is close
relative to the complementary color
scheme. But instead of using the
color’s complement, this scheme uses
the two colors adjacent to the
compliment.
5. Triadic- It used three colors that are
equal distance with each other.
6. Tetradic- Also known as double
complementary color scheme, this
used 2 pairs of complementary colors.
VALUE
This elements refers to lightness or darkness of an area. This
element is evidence in creating shadows for a 2-dimensional
object to give an illusion of depth.
TEXTURE
This element refers to the feel or

appearance of a surface. It may describe
either smooth or rough.
It may also describe as:

Actual texture can be felt tangibly based
on the material that is used for the
artwork.
Implied texture can be exhibited, for
instance, in a painting of fur of an animal.
SPACE
Refers to the area that is occupied
by an object or a subject, as well as
the area surrounding the object or
subject. An illusion of space can
still be created in 2 dimensional
surface using perspective.
There are 2 types of perspective:

1. Atmospheric perspective- which
utilize the properties of light & air
in depicting the illusion of distance.
2. Linear perspective-which
involves the use of vanishing points
& receding hidden lines.
TIME & MOTION
Movement in the visual

arts can either be an
illusion or an actual
motion. An illusion of
movement in 2-
dimensional artworks.
Actual motion is easily
seen in KINETIC
SCULPTURE, a type of
sculpture that moves with
the wind or are vibrating.
