Impact
The earthquake struck near a mountainous, albeit
very populous region near the Sikkim–Nepal
border; most of the structures were reported to be
highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking. Upon
impact, tens of thousands of residents evacuated
their homes, and many areas suffered from
communication and power outages. The strong
shaking caused significant building collapse and
mudslides;at least 111 people were confirmed
killed by the effects of the earthquake, and
hundreds of others sustained injuries. As the
earthquake occurred in the monsoon season, heavy
rain and landslides rendered rescue work47more

Disasters Delhi

Delhi and NCR is also vulnerable to

quakes because of its proximity to
Himalayas. There are many faults,
ridges and lineaments transverse to
the Himalayan arc. A major
earthquake in the Himalayan seismic
belt may be a threat to Delhi-NCR

74.8 millimetres of rainfall till 8.30 am

The National Capital received its first spell of

IMPACT ON SIKKIM
If any earthquake occurs in Sikkim , there is
a huge possibility of having widespread
ground failure and landslides. The damage
will cause failure of retaining
walls,foundation failures, damage to roads
and creep of soil due to shaking ground. The
earthquake can give higher damage in the
central and the southern parts of Sikkim like
Mangan, Singtam, Gangtok. The MADE BY
Kanchenjunga mountains can also cause a Udita Sharma
great destruction in Sikkim if hit by a higher IX E, 46
magnitude earthquake.
Also, there are many places in
Sikkim like Chungthang, which
are surrounded by big
mountains and hills. The
Chungthang dam and the
Rangit dam in Sikkim can also
cause great damage. If
landslides struck any dam in
Sikkim, then all the flow of
water can cause floods in the
nearby places in Sikkim.

IMPACT ON DELHI
The effect of the earthquake in Delhi would be
devastating. In fact, innumerable high rise
buildings in Noida, Gurugram and neighbouring
areas of Delhi would be razed to dust if struck by a
high magnitude earthquake. Delhi is also in close
proximity with Himalayas where several
earthquakes of more than 8 magnitude had
occurred. In future, if there becomes a possibility MADE BY
of major earthquakes and tremors in Himalayan Udita
region it can severely affect the Delhi-NCR also. Sharma
