NANO TECHNOLOGY

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• At the end of the lesson on Nanotechnology, the students should be able to
• 1. Define Nanotechnology its description and classification
• 2. Give the applications of Nanotechnology in terms of the following
• medicine, energy, food science, environmental remediation.
• 3, Cite the advantages and disadvantages of nano technology
• Nanotechnology
• Is technology that deals with dimensions and tolerances of less than 100
nanometers especially the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules.
• The manipulation of materials on an atomic or molecular scale especially to
build microscopic devices ( such as robots)
• Nanotechnology will give us complete control over the structure of matter,
allowing us to build any substance or structure permitted by the laws of nature
HOW DOES NANO TECHNOLOGY WORKS

• Nanotechnology is the nanoscale science, engineering and technology

involves imaging, measuring , modeling and manipulating matter at specific
length scale. The nanoscale , the nanometer is a billionth of a meter .
• Nanotechnologies involve the design, characterization, production of
nanoscale structures, devices and systems tahat produces structures, devices
and systems with at least one novel/superior characateristics or property.
APPLICATIONS TO NANO TECHNOLOGY

• Applications in medicine
• Nanomedicine draws on the natural scale of biological phenomena to produce precise
solutions for disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment
• Commercial applications have adapted gold nanoparticles as probes for the detection of
targeted sequences of nucleic acids and gold particles are clinically investigated as
potential treatments
• Better imaging and diagnostic tools for earlier diagnosis , more individualized
treatment
• Nano technology is being studied for both diagnosis and treatment of antherosclorosis
• Nano technology researches are working on a number of different therapeutics where a
nano particle can encapsulate or otherwise help to deliver medication directly to cancer
cells and minimize the risk of damage to healthy tissue.
• Research in the use of nanotechnology for regenerative spans several application areas
including bone and neural tissue engineering
• Nano medicine researches are looking at ways that nanotechnology can improve vaccines
including vaccine without needel.
APPLICATION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY IN FOOD
SCIENCE
• The application of nanotechnology in food sector can be summarized in two main
groups that are food nanostructured ingredients( this from food processing to food
packaging) and food nanosensing can be applied to achieve better food quality and
safety evaluation.
• Nanotechnology in food processing
• The nano structures can be used as food additives, carriers for smart delivery of
nutrients , anti caking agents , anti microbial agents, fillers for improving
mechanical strength and durability.
NANO TECHNOLOGY ENERGY APPLICATIONS

• Nano technology is already being used to develop many new kinds of batteries that are quicker-
charging more efficient, lighter weight, have a higher power density and hold electrical charge longer
• Nano technology can be incorporated into solar panels to convert sunlight to electricity more
efficiently, promising inexpensive solar power in the furure.
• An epoxy containing carbon nanotubes is being sued to make windmill blades that are longer,
stronger, and lighter weight.
• Researchers are developing thin-film solar electric panels that can be fitted onto computer cases and
flexible piezoelectric nanowires woven into clothing to generate useful energy on the go from light,
friction and or body heat to power mobile electronic devices
NANO BASED TECHNOLOGY FOR
RENEWABLE ENERGY GENERATOR
NANO TECHNOLOGY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL
REMEDIATION
• Nano technology could help meet the need for affordable , clean drinking water through
rapid low-cost detection and treatment of impurities in water
• Nano particles are being developed to clean industrial water pollutants in ground water
through chemical reactions that render the pollutants harmless.
• Many airplane cabin and other types of air filters are nanotechnology –based filters that
allow mechanical filtration
• Nanotechnology enabled sensors and solutions are now able to detect and identify chemical
and biological agents in the air and soil which much higher sensitivity than ever before.
ADVANTAGES OF USING NANOTECHNOLOGY
• 1. Promoting renewable energies
• it enables new ways to obtain and store energy. It also makes solar panels
cheaper and more efficient
• 2. It extends the limits of electronics
• Nano make it possible to build very precious circuits at an atomic level
• 3. It allows more effective medicine
• Arteries can be unblocked cells can be selectively attacked damaged genes
DISADVANTAGES OF NANO TECHNOLGY
• It threatens the environment
• This type of technology could cause negative effects on the environment by generating new
toxins and pollutants
• It has an impact on the job market
• the obsolete materials and changes in production processes could destroy jobs but this
technology could create others
• It compromises the safety
• The properties of this technology could facilitate espionage the production of nano weapons
