CURRICULUM
• Is a standards-based sequence of planned experiences where

students practice and achieve proficiency in content and applied
learning skills.
• Is the central guide for all educators as to what is essential for

teaching and learning, so that every student has access to rigorous
academic experiences.
CURRICULUM SOURCES
3 MAJOR SOURCES OF CURRICULUM (Tyler 1949)

1.SUBJECT MATTER – the topic dealt with or the subject
represented.
2.SOCIETY – people of a particular country, area, time as an

organized community.
3.LEARNERS – people who are learning a subject or skill.

CURRICULUM PLANNING
 The process concerned with making decisions about what to learn,

why, and how to organize the teaching and learning process taking into
account existing curriculum requirements and the resources available.
 It provides a guide by supplying learning outcomes along with activities

designed to help achieve those outcomes. It serves as a framework of
reference for the classroom teacher and ensures the teacher delivers
the appropriate content effectively to the students.
• Curriculum planning involves implementing different
instructional strategies and organizational methods that are
focused on achieving optimal student development and
student learning outcomes. Instructors might structure their
curriculum around daily lesson plans, a specific assignment, a
chunk of coursework, certain units within a class, or an
entire educational program.
• During the curriculum planning phase, educators consider

factors that might complement or hinder their lesson. These
include institutional requirements.
PURPOSE OF CURRICULUM PLANNING
• Purpose of curriculum planning is to

describe the learning opportunities
available to students. Thus curriculum
planning is ultimately concerned with the
experiences of learners.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CURRICULUM PLANNING
• CP is ultimately concerned with the experiences

of learners.
• CP involves decisions about both context and
methods.
• CP involves decisions about a variety of issues.
• CP involves many groups.
• CP takes place in many levels.
• CP is a continuous process
CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Is the planning period when instructors organize the instructional
units for their course. It involves planning activities, readings,
lessons, and assessments that achieve educational goals.
• It is largely concerned with issues such as what to include in the
curriculum and how to present it in such a way that the curriculum
can be implemented with understanding and success (Barlow et al.,
1984).
• Refers to how the components of the curriculum have been arranged
in order to facilitate learning (Shiundu & Omulando, 1992).
• A core pillar of how we educate, train, and engage in formal learning
experiences. At the core of curriculum design is a mental model for
how people learn and a design representation for how knowledge and
skill transfer occurs from theory into practice.
PURPOSE OF CURRICULUM DESIGN
• The purpose of a curriculum design is to help

educational institutions to meet the needs of
their students.
• Curriculum design is a relatively new approach to
education that seeks to find ways that schools can
be more effective at teaching students within the
constraints of limited time and resources.
TYPES OF CURRICULUM DESIGN:
• SUBJECT-CENTERED DESIGN
- focuses on a specific discipline.
-refers to the organization of curriculum in terms of
separate subjects, e.g. geography, math, and history, etc.
• LEARNER-CENTERED DESIGN
- takes each individual's needs, interests, and goals into
consideration.
• PROBLEM-CENTERED DESIGN
- focuses on specific issues and how to source solutions.
- also uses a student approach but that instructs students to
look at a problem or situation and figure out a way to solve it.
