Storm water is water that originates during precipitation events. It Tr ans Ev apora
may also be used to apply to water that originates with snowmelt pir ation tion
that enters the storm water system. Storm water that does not soak
into the ground becomes surface runoff, which either flows directly
into surface waterways or is channeled Percolation Runoff Runoff

into storm sewers, which eventually discharge to surface waters.
2.Gutters: Channels all around the edge of a sloping roof to collect and transport
rainwater to the storage tank. Gutters can be semi-circular or rectangular and could be
made using plain galvanized iron sheet, Semi- circular gutters of PVC material , Bamboo
or betel trunks cut vertically in half. The size of the gutter should be according to the flow
during the highest intensity rain.
3.Conduits: Conduits are pipelines or drains that carry rainwater from the catchment or rooftop area to the
harvesting system. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or galvanized iron (GI), materials that are commonly available.
The following table gives an idea the diameter of pipe required for draining out rainwater based on rainfall
intensity and roof area:

RAIN WATER HARVESTING
WHY RAIN WATER HARVESTING?
•To arrest ground water decline and expand ground water table
"Conscious collection and storage of
•To beneficiate water quality in aquifers
rainwater to cater the demands of water,
•To conserve surface water runoff during monsoon
for drinking, domestic purpose & irrigation
•To reduce soil erosion

•To inculcate(instil)a culture of water conservation
(Aquifers: only found in usable quantities in certain
places underground and those places are call aquifers)

RAIN WATER HARVESTING COMPONENTS
FIRST FLUSH
First flush is a device used to flush off the water
received in first shower.
The first show rains needs to be flushed-off to avoid
contamination of storable/rechargeable water by
atmosphere and the catchment roof.
It will also helps in cleaning of silt and other material
deposited on roof during dry seasons..
(Need of filtration: After rainwater is collected
from a roof, it should be filtered before it is stored
in a tank. This is to ensure that it is kept in the
best possible condition, to avoid ruin of organic
material, development of odors etc.)

component should be filled with gravel and sand
alternatively as shown in the figure. A layer of
charcoal could also be inserted between two
layers. The filter should be provided with
necessary inlet and outlet. This filter could be
placed horizontally or vertically in the system.
