THE

CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM
The circulatory system is a transport system of the body. It is
responsible for the distribution of blood and other nutrients throughout the
body.
HEART
- The heart is known as the pumping organ of the body. It keeps the
blood moving throughout the body and the average heartbeat of human is 60 to 100
times per minute.

- The heart is hollow muscular organ located in the chest, between the lungs. It is
about the size of clenched fist. It pumps blood to the different parts of the body.

- It is enclosed in a protective sac called PERICARDIUM that enables the heart to

smoothly contract and relax.
Right Side of the Heart
Blood enters the heart through two large veins, the inferior and superior vena
cava, emptying oxygen-poor blood from the body into the right atrium of the
heart.

Left Side of the Heart

The pulmonary vein empties oxygen-rich blood from the lungs into the left atrium of
the heart. As the atrium contracts, blood flows from the left atrium into the left
ventricle through the open mitral valve. When the ventricle is full, the mitral valve
shuts.
BLOOD
The blood is the liquid part that is constantly flowing throughout the body.

The blood has two parts:

Liquid Part and Solid Part

LIQUID PART- Consists of plasma

- 55% is the liquid part which makes the blood flow.

plasma- Is the liquid part of the blood which is straw-yellow in color. It is

made up of 90% water and the remaining 10% includes proteins, nutrients,
wastes, hormones, and dissolved electrolytes.
Solid PART- Consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
- 45% of the total volume of the blood.

RED BLOOD CELLS- are produced in the red marrow bone.

- also called as “erythrocytes”.
- carry oxygen from the lungs and transport it to the body parts and
remove carbon dioxide and other wastes.
WHITE BLOOD CELLS- also called as “leukocytes”.
- bigger than the red blood cells but are fewer in number.
- There are about 1 white blood cells in every 500 red blood cells.
- They are said to be the soldiers of the body because they protect
and defend the body from diseases and infection.

PLATELETS OR THROMBOCYTES- fragments that are relatively smaller

and irregular in shape.
- They play an important role in blood clothing.
- Lack of platelets in the blood can cause excessive bleeding.
BLOOD VESSELS
The blood vessels are the vast networks of small tubes that carry blood
throughout the body.

• The arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from
the heart.

• Veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart.

• The capillaries are the smallest blood vessels which serve as a

connection between arteries and veins.
