•How long does an Employer/ recruiter take to


initially view a CV?
 
•A single job advertisement can have more than
200 applicants so it's important to STAND OUT

•The same may apply when looking for work


placements
 
Where to begin?

•Read and understand the job advertisement/ work


placement requirements
•Match your jobs/experience and skills to the
advertisement or expectations
•Most relevant information on the first page
•2 pages maximum
•Clear and easy to follow (bullet points help)
 
Formatting

This is very important!


Your CV should be well set out to make it easy to find key information

• Be consistent throughout your CV


• Font- Use clear, simple, modern fonts (Arial,
Calibri etc)
• Name – larger than the rest of the text
• Headings - font size 12/14
• Text font - size 11/12
• Use Bullet points
• Avoid text boxes and complicated formats
• Keep it short and concise

• Identify your skills 


Specialised/Technical Skills
These are specific skills that you have developed • Give practical examples of your skills
due to studying particular subjects or working in
particular areas
Transferable Skills
Examples:
These are the skills you have developed

Knowing your skills and strengths

An important part of selling yourself, is knowing what your skills and strengths are

They are essential to your career goals, and it is important that you can identify these

These can be industry specific, technical, operational, personal and so on

A great way to help is by thinking about skills in all areas of your life, not just work. These
are called often called soft skills, transferable skills or employability skills and these are the
skills that Employers say are essential for their workplace alongside the more technical skills
