Least count –
Least count of any measuring instrument is the smallest quantity that can be
measured using that instrument.

1) Vernier caliper -
LC = DMS / DVS
DMS = Smallest Division on Main Scale = 1mm
DVS = No of divisions on Vernier Scale = 50

Operating instruction for Vernier caliper
1. Loose both locking screws.
2. Close the caliper jaws.
3. Check zero setting (If not ok, return to Gauge Room)
4. Adjust jaws to job which is under measurement.
5. Lock the locking screw on main scale.
6. Now adjust the jaws with the help of fine adjustment.
7. Note down the reading on main scale and vernier scale

Operating instruction for dial bore gauge

1) Select the dial bore gauge as per required bore size
e.g. for 80 mm ID Select dial size 50 -150 mm range
2) Take the setting holder / setting ring
3) Set dial bore gauge in setting holder / setting ring
4) Apply pressure 0.080 mm on the dial & set the zero.
5) Recheck zero setting & check the consistency of reading.

Care to be taken while using Instruments.

1. Do not apply sudden shocks to instruments.

2. Do not drop it or apply excessive force to it.
3. Before taking measurements e.g. Vernier calipers, Micrometers ensure zero setting.
4. Apply clean oil to the sliding surface. Lack of oil may cause scratches on the sliding surface resulting in
unsmooth sliding movement.
5. If error observed in Instruments do not disassemble. It may damage the instrument. Return the
Instrument to gauge room.
6. Please do not stack the Instruments one over another.
7. Do not store at dusty environment.
8. Clean the instruments by wiping dust/ chippings after use and apply anticorrosive oil.
