CARGO HANDLING

EQUIPMENT
UNIT 1 SHIP
If the ship has her own cargo handling
equipment, she is called ‘geared ship’.
If she has no cargo handling facilities,
she is called as ‘ungeared ship’.
 gear(n.) : a set of equipment or tools
you need for a particular activity
GEARED SHIP
UNGEARED SHIP
Today many ships are ungeared because
they rely entirely on shoreside cargo
handling facilities.
Shipboard cargo handling equipment
consists of:
hatch covers,
cargo winches,
derricks,
deck cranes and
gantry cranes.
HATCH COVERS
The hatch covers are used to close
off the hatch openings and make
them watertight.
 watertight(adj.) : having no openings to
allow the entry of water
water + tight
air + tight
 Pontoon (lift-away) hatch covers are lifted away by
a crane on the ship or a crane on the quay.
 The panels are stacked either on ship’s deck or on
the quay.
 They are the simplest designed ship hatch covers.
 Although the design is simple, the opening and
closing operation requires time and attention.
 These hatch covers are widely used in container
ships.

Side rolling hatch covers
A traditional side-rolling cover consists of two panels per
hatch, each panel rolling sideways on a pair of transverse
ramps.  Sliding the covers sideways is provided by the
pinion gear system or chain drive.

It is used in ore ships (Ore Carrier) where the hatch width

can reach 30% or 50% of the ship mold width.

Piggy-back hatch covers are used on bulk
carriers when the available deck space is
insufficient for the rolling covers.
The system consists of two panels, with one
panel being raised high enough for the other
to roll underneath and support the lifted
panel.

 Foldinghatch covers are hinged together and
they can be opened and closed hydraulically.

 Anefficient use of cargo space is extremely

important to bulk carriers.

 Folding hatch covers are designed to simplify

cargo handing operations which improves vessel
efficiency.

CRANES
Deck cranes are electric, hydraulic or
electro-hydraulic driven lifting gear
located on ship's deck.
The cranes have three principal
movements provided by motors:
hoisting,
luffing,
slewing.
Hoisting is lifting the cargo.

Luffing is raising and lowering the

crane jib.

 Slewing is rotating the crane.

Deck cranes are placed between two
hatches and they can slew around 360° and
so they can load or discharge two holds.
The cranes may be used for lifting
cargo by using a hook or for grabbing
with a grab.

Some cargo handling equipment such
as slings, strops (snotters), chain
slings, cargo nets and heavy lifting
beams can be attached to the crane
by means of a U-shaped shackle.

Some container vessels are
equipped with gantry cranes for
handling containers.
The shipboard gantry crane moves
along the weather deck on rails in
order to service each cargo hold.
