LESSON 4:

PISTOL SHOOTING
A. Range Safety Etiquettes
1. When entering the firing range, make sure your
firearm is unloaded.
2. The firearm must be uncased and cased in the
safety area (SA) at all times.
3. No handling of ammunition in the safe area
(SA)
4. Firearms, once holstered, may not be handled in
any way outside the (SA) without the express
authorization of a range officer (RO). The
firearm must be holstered at all times.
5. Whether shooting or not, eye and ear protection
must be worn at all times while at the range.
6. Keep the 180 degree rule in mind when comes
to safety. When you are allowed to handle your
firearm, always point the muzzle downrange.
When there are people in front of you or
downrange never hold your firearm.
7. Unless otherwise stated, the person to your
right is always given priority in a firing line with
no barrier.
8. Always announce your intention to fire before
you begin shooting so that people can prepare.
9. Load the firearm only if instructed to do so by
the RO
10. The only boss inside the firing range is the RO
11. There is no smoking, drinking, or eating while
in firing facility.
12. When firing indoor, use ventilation system to
remove airborne particulates.
13. If you are unfamiliar with the firearm, seek
advice from a knowledgeable person.
14. Make certain that the range backstop and other
range surfaces are capable of stopping the bullets.
15. Before loading the firearm, make sure there is
no obstruction in the barrel.
16. To avoid barrel obstructions, never allow the
muzzle of a firearm to touch the ground if you are
on outdoor range.
17. Use only ammunition that is compatible with
your firearm.
18. If you have any doubts about the safety of a
firearm, use a mount of stand and test the gun in a
safe and protected area
19. If you are firing in a group, pay attention to and
obey range commands.
Firing/ Shooting Range – It is a duly accredited
venue used in the conduct of shooting competitions
or shooting exercises.

Safe Area – It is identified place within the


perimeter of the firing range which is utilized for
uncasing and casing of the firearm, practice in
drawing and holstering of gum, dry firing, and
changing of magazine.
RANGE COMMANDS

1. “Load and make ready” or “Make ready” – the
load and make ready command is given when
the gun ready condition is loaded (chamber
loaded and magazine inserted).
Loading – It is a firearm operation wherein a round
is inserted in the chamber of the gun.

2. “Are you ready?” – This command is given to


determine the readiness of the competitor.
constitutes that the competitor isNegative answer or
silence ready.
If the competitor is not ready he/she must state “not
ready”
3. “Standby” – This command should be followed
by the start signal within 1 to 4 seconds.
4. “Start Signal”
5. “Stop” – this command can be issued by any RO
assigned to a stage at any moment during the
course of fire, especially in unsafe situation or
serious violation of the rules of gun safety.
6. “If you are finished, unload and show clear” –
This command is issued if the competitor has
finished shooting.
He/she must lower a gun and present it for
inspection to the RO.
7. “If clear, hammer down, holster” the competitor
must not resume shooting after receiving this
command.

He must perform the final checks on the handgun.


Pistol - Release the slide, then pull the trigger without touching the
hammer or decocker, if applicable.
Revolver – Close the empty cylinder without touching the hammer.
8. “Range is clear” – once the declaration is
made officials and competitors may move
forward to score, patch, reset targets, and the
like.

Rules for safety shooting
• Be aware of your target and what lies beyond.
• Make sure that the gun is safe to use.
• Learn how to use firearms safely.
• Use only the require ammunition for your gun.
• Wearing eye and ear protection is a must.
• Never use alcohol or drugs before, during a shooting
session.
• Store firearms in a secure location where unauthorized
individuals will not able to access them
• Be aware that the certain types of guns, as well as many
shooting scenarios, necessitates additional safety
precautions.
What to do incase you have a problem with your gun?
• Point the gun in a safe direction while your finger is off
the trigger.
• Raise your hand and seek for assistance.
What to do incase you drop some ammunition?
• Point the gun in a safe direction while your finger is off
the trigger.

What are the safety issue commands once a violation is
observed?
• Yell “finger” for finger guard violation
• Yell “muzzle” for muzzle approaching safety point.
• Yell “stop” for gross unsafe action or disqualification.
• Yell “cover” for failure to maintain cover.
