CONTROL
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides the basic education and
understanding about drugs, its categories and
effects to an individual. Its also includes study
regarding the most commonly abused drugs
worldwide and in the Philippines as well as its
adverse effects to human body system. The
course also introduces learning about
Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act (RA 9165),
its investigation and of those laws pertaining to
other vices

Drug Education
 Itis the study of the origin of
drugs, their causes and effects,
and legal implications for the
purpose of changing people’s
attitudes and practices towards
drug abuse and its related vices.
Drugs
 - Any chemically active substance rendering a
specific effect on the central nervous system of
man.

 - A chemical substance that affects the functions of
living cells and alters body or mind processes when
taken into the body or applied through the skin.

 - Is a chemical substance that brings about
physical, emotional or behavioral changes in a
person taking it.
 - Any chemical substance, other
than food, which is intended for
used in the diagnosis, treatment,
cure, mitigation or prevention of
disease or symptoms.
- The term drug derives from the

14th century French word drogue,
which means a dry substance.
Nature of Drugs:
 Two forms of Drugs:
 a. Natural Drugs- are made by the Devine
Providence which include natural plant, flowering
tops hashish, leaves, marijuana, opium and resin
 b. Synthetic Drugs- made by man in clandestine
laboratory.
 Prescriptive Drug- It is a drug that can only
be purchased with the written permission from a
physician.
 Over the Counter Drug- It is a drug used to
treat minor illness that can be purchased even
without permission coming from a license
 doctor/physician.
Dosage- It is the amount of drug taken at a particular time.
 Toxicology- It is a branch of knowledge,

which deals with the study of poisons, their
effects and antidotes.
 Types of Dosage:
 1. Lethal- It refers to the amount of drug that
will cause death.
 2. Abusive- refers to the amount of drug
needed to produce side effects.

 3. Minimal- refers to the smallest amount of
drug that will produce a therapeutic effect.

4. Maximal- refers to the amount of
drug that will produce a desired
therapeutic effect, without any
accompanying symptoms of
poisoning.
5. Toxic- refers to the amount of
drug that produces untoward effects
or symptoms of toxicity to the body
of a person.
 Common Methods of Drug
Administration
1. Inhalation- It is a method of drug
administration that is being done
through the nose going to the mucous
membrane of the respiratory tract. It is
the best method for taking solvents.
2. Injection- It makes use of a needle or
other instrument to directly administer
the drug into the body of a person.
 3.Iontophoresis- It refers to the
administration of drugs into the
deeper layers of the skin through
the special type of electric current
for local effect.
4. Oral- It is considered as the most
convenient and safest way of
administering drug into the body of
a person through the use of mouth.
 5. Topical- It refers to the
application of drugs directly to a
part of the body that needs to be
treated.
 6. Snorting - Inhalation through
the nose of drugs not in gaseous

form. It is performed by inhaling
a powder of liquid drug into the
nose coats of the mucous
membrane.
 7. Buccal - The drug is administered by
placing them in the buccal cavity just
under the lips. The active ingredients of
the drug will be absorbed into the
bloodstream through the soft tissues
lining of the mouth.
 8. Suppositories - The drug is
administered through the vagina or
rectum in suppository form and the drug
will also be absorbed by the
bloodstream.
 9.Sublingual – under tongue
 10. Mucous membrane – inside
mouth and nose.

When are drugs harmful?
 Any drug may be harmful when taken in:
 - Excess;
 - Dangerous combinations;
 - By hypersensitive (allergic) person
DANGEROUS EFFECTS OF DRUGS
 1. Poisonous Property- It produces
harmful effect to the system of a
person due to the presence of toxin.
 2. Idiosyncrasy- It is a peculiarity of
the physical or the mental
constitution, especially susceptibility
towards drugs, foods etc.

 3. Side Effects- It is the undesirable
effect of the drug when the
treatment goes beyond the desired
therapeutic effect.
 4.Overdose- It happens when the
amount of drug taken by a person is
too much or above the prescription.
5.Allergy-It refers to an exaggerated
reaction by our immune system in
response in bodily contact with certain
foreign substances. It exaggerated
because these foreign substances are
usually seen by the body as harmless
and no response occurs in non-allergic
people. Allergic people’s bodies
recognize the foreign substances and
one part of the immune system is
turned on.
Medical Uses of Drugs
 1.Sedatives and Tranquilizers- These
are drugs that can calm and quiet the
nerves and relieve anxiety without
causing depression and clouding of the
mind.
 2. Analgesics- These are sometimes
referred to as painkiller medications.
Examples of these drugs are aspirin,
ibuprofen and naproxen.
 3. Vitamins- These are drugs
necessary for normal growth,
development and proper
functioning of the body.
 4.Expectorants- These are drugs

that can ease the expulsion of
mucus and phlegm from the lungs
and the throat.
 5. Decongestants- These are drugs
that relieve congestion of the nasal
passages
 6. Antibiotics- These are drugs used
to fight and treat infection.

 7. Antipyretics- These are drugs that
can lower body temperature of fever

due to infection.
 8. Laxatives- These are drugs that
stimulate defecation and encourage

bowel movement.
 9. Antihistamines- These are
drugs that control allergic
reactions

 10. Contraceptives- These are
drugs that can prevent the
meeting of the egg cell and sperm
cell or prevent the ovary from
releasing egg cells.
Drug Abuse Jargons:The following are the
commonly used words in the circle of drug
dependents:
 A Bag- refers to a pocket of drug.
 Acid- the slang term for Lysergic Acid
Diethylamide(LSD).
 Acid Head- refers to LSD user.
 A Fix- refers to one injection of opiate.
 A Hit- the slang for injection of drugs.
 Coke- street term for cocaine.
 Cold Turkey- refers to withdrawal effects of
opiate use.
 Downer- the street slang for depressant,
Drop- the taking of drugs through the mouth.
Flashback- refers to a drug use after stoppage.
Head- refers to a drug user.
High- term used to describe that a person is
under the influence of drugs.
Joint- refers to a marijuana cigarette.
Juni- the slang term for heroin.
Junkie- refers to an opiate addict.
Mainline/ To shoot- The injection of a drug
into the vein.
On- the-Nod/ Nodding- refers to a suspended
sleep
Opiate- the slang term for narcotics.
Overdose- the term used when death
occurred due to the excessive use of
drugs.
Roach- refers to butt end of a joint.
Rush- the beginning of a high.
Skin Popping- to inject a drug under a
skin.
Speed- refers to amphetamine
Speed Freaks- refers to amphetamine
addict.
Stoned- the intoxicating effect of a drug.
 Trip- the reaction that is caused by drugs.
 Track- refers to scars on the skin caused by
injection of drugs.
 Uppers- street slang for amphetamine.
 Work- refers to apparatus for injecting a drug.

