Starter: How Else Can We Say It?

How would you rephrase the following facts:

More than 50% of the class like football.

99% of the group thought that English grammar was important.

Last year, ten people took an Advanced Higher in


Maths. This year, the number was closer to 30.

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing means putting what you have read into


your own words.
Paraphrasing

One of the meanings of the prefix Para is Latin and


Greek for “Beyond”.

With this in mind, what do you think it means about


putting things into your own words?
Paraphrasing

In close reading, you paraphrase by:

• Reading something;

• Thinking about what it means;

• Restating it in your own words.


Task

Why might paraphrasing by useful? Discuss and tick if true:

Numbers are tricky when paraphrasing, but it is possible.

• State the number as a fraction.

• Flip a percentage and describe the opposite.
