Skewness
• Skewness is asymmetry in a statistical distribution, in which the curve appears
distorted or skewed either to the left or to the right. Skewness can be quantified
to define the extent to which a distribution differs from a normal distribution.
• 1. Positive Skewness
• If the given distribution is shifted to the left and with its tail on the right side, it
is a positively skewed distribution. It is also called the right-skewed
distribution. A tail is referred to as the tapering of the curve in a different way
from the data points on the other side
• 2. Negative Skewness
• If the given distribution is shifted to the right and with its tail on the left side, it
is a negatively skewed distribution. It is also called a left-skewed distribution.
The skewness value of any distribution showing a negative skew is always less
than zero. The skewness of the given distribution is on the left; hence, the
mean value is less than the median and moves towards the left, and the mode
occurs at the highest frequency of the distribution.
Measure of Skewness
• Karl Pearson coefficient of skewness
SKp =
• Bowley’s Coefficient of Skewness
SKp=
Numerical
Data of rejected items during a production process are as
follows:
No. of rejects: 20-25 25-30 30-35 35-40 40-45 45-
50 50-55
No. of operators: 5 15 28 42 15 12 3.
Calculate coefficient of Skewness and comment.

Practise Numerical
• From the following Data on age of employees, calculate
the coefficient of skewness and comment on the result
Age Below(Years): 25 30 35 40 45 50
55
No. of Employees: 8 20 40 65 80 92

Ans: Skp=0.07
