He served as president of the Republic of Costa Rica
for three terms:

1948 (Junta of the Second Republic)


1948 (April to May) (Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica)
1953 to 1974 (32nd and 36th president of Costa Rica )
Costa Rican Civil War

Was due to the fact that part of the electoral material was destroyed in a fire
whose origin was never established.
One of its main achievements
was the abolition of the Costa
Rican army.
Figueres Ferrer

 Figueres Ferrer was born in San Ramón


 In 1924 he left for Boston, U.S.A. (There he studies hydroelectric engineering
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.)
Political life
In a radio speech given on July 8, 1942, he denounced irregular acts and
corruption on the part of the then government, led by Rafael Calderón Guardia.

For this event they were exiled from Costa Rica.

He returns to Costa Rica, and takes action when the electoral fraud was
executed in the country, achieving a victory for him as leader of the movement.
Political life

On December 1, 1948, José Figueres declared the abolition of the Army in a


symbolic act in which he demolished with a sledgehammer the battlements on
the west side of the central courtyard of the Bellavista Barracks, site where the
National Museum of Costa Rica now stands.
Later life

His party managed to become president of the country twice, where he reformed
many things.
The Palacion Nacional is destroyed
The vast majority of ministries and autonomous institutions were created.
Death

He died in San José on June 8, 1990 at the age of 83

Main achievements

 Creation of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).


 Abolition of the army
 Approval of women's suffrage.
 Creation of the National Institute of Housing and Urbanism (INVU).
 Creation of the Mixed Institute of Social Assistance (Instituto Mixto de Ayuda
Social)
 Nationalization of the Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (RECOPE).
 Transfer of Hospitals to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (Caja
Costarricense de Seguro Social).
