WHAT IS RATIO?

What is the ratio of red apple

to green apple?
RATIOS IS A
COMPARISON OF TWO
QUANTITIES.
RED

APPLES
From
GREEN
APPLES
RATIOS CAN
BE WRITTEN
AS FRACTION.
We can write ratio in
three ways:
4:3 Colon
4 is to 3 Word
4/3 Fraction
Laila’s planted 12 fruit trees in the
orchard. Of these trees, 5 are
mango trees and the rest are apple
trees.
Let us compare the number of Mango
trees to the total fruit trees
planted in orchard.
The ratio is

5:12 or 5/12

RATIOS, LIKE
FRACTION CAN
EXPRESS IN
LOWEST
TERMS.
In a classroom, there are 4 boys
and two girls.

Simplifying Ratio
Ratio can be simplified in the same way as
fractions are reduced.
Example in a faculty room, there are 15
tables and 10 chairs. Find the ration of tables to
chairs.
There are 18 red marbles and
36 blue marbles.
a. what is the ratio of red
marbles to blue marbles?
b. What is the ration of the
blue marble to red marbles?
c. What is the ration of red
marbles to Total marbles?
d. What is the ratio of the blue marble to
the total marbles?
Example:3
Use ratio to compare the records of each
school’s basketball team.

REMEMBER, RATIOS MUST
EXPRESSES FIRST IN BOTH
MEASUREENT AND UNIT.

THE STATEMENT
THAT TWO
RATIOS ARE
EQUAL CALLED
PROPORTION.
3:10 = 15:50
MEANS

EXTREMES

*To prove that they are equal, cross multiply.

Each has an answer of 150.
FINDING THE TERM
IN PROPORTION
n:3 = 10:15

*n is the
unknown
variable.
STEP 1.
Write the proportion in
fraction form.
n = 10
3 15
STEP 2.
Multiply the extremes and then the means.
Note that, we use the raised dot (.) for
multiplication instead of x symbol.

n = 10 15 . n = 3 . 10
3 15 15n = 30
STEP 3.
Divide the left and right
sides
15n = 30
n=2
15 15
To check, replace “n” with
2, and then cross multiply.
2 = 10 2.15 = 30
3 15 3.10 = 30

Exercise
Express the following ratios in lowest term.

1. 5:20
2. 12:4
3. 6:18
4. 1 hour to 120 minutes
5. 9 days to 3 weeks
Find the value of “n” in each
following proportions.

1. n:4 = 3:6
2. 8:12 = 10:n
3. 5:n = 1:2
4. 3:7 = 24:n
5. n:10 = 18:5
The division of
quantity to whole
into two or more
equal or unequal pairs
is caleed partitive.
