What is Statistics?

 Statistics is foundation of data science and a branch of

mathematics.
 Statistics deal with the collection, description, analysis,
interpretation, and presentation of data.
 Statistics can be used to describe a particular data set
as well as to draw conclusions about the population
from a particular data set.

Statistics Questions:

 A boys eat more than girls?

 What is the average number of cars in a parking lot on

Monday mornings?

 How much time do the members of my family

spending eating per year?
Descriptive and Inferential Statistics

Two branches of statistics:

Descriptive Statistics
Organizing and summarizing
data using numbers & graphs
Statistics

Inferential Statistics
Using sample data to make an
inference or draw a conclusion
of the population
Descriptive Statistics
Vs Inferential Statistics

- A branch of statistics that deals - A branch of statistics that aims

making predictions.

-To describe the characteristics - To draw conclusions of the data

Objective
Data Sets
Population :
- It is the collection of all outcomes, responses,
measurements or counts that are of interest.
Sample :
- It is a subset of the populations.
Population: All Students
taking Statistics classes at
NSCC
Sample: All
Students in

Parameter:
- It is a description of a population characteristic.
Statistic:
- It is a description of a sample characteristic.
Pupulation Vs Sample
 A population is a collection of all possible individuals,
objects or measurements of interest.
 A sample is a portion, or part, of the population of
interest.

From the population
All people
Random Sampling
 Random sampling is a statistical technique used in
selecting people or items for research. There are many
techniques that can be used.
 The following are commonly used random sampling
methods:
Classification of Data
Data can be classified into two basic types: Qualitative or
quantitative.

Data

Qualitative Quantitative
(Categorical) (Numerical)

Represents information Represents information

regarding a quality or regarding a quantity or
attribute; not a quantity. amount; not a quality.
Data Measurement Levels

Correlation
Correlation is a statistical tool that helps to measure and
analyse the degree of relationship between two variables.
Correlation analysis deals with the association between two
or more variables.
Correlation

Positive Negative
