LENSES AND THEIR USES

• Objectives:
• describe a lens /lenses
• differentiate the types of lenses in terms of
structure and the type of image formation
• give the applications of lenses
REVIEW:

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:

.1.the
light travels from less dense to
denser medium
2.The angle of incidence is < the
angle of refraction
3. The tendency of light is to move
faster when passing through the
second medium
ACIVITY: EXPLORATION ABOUT LENSES

• Station 1: Reading Viewing about lenses

• Station 2: Getting in touch with concave lens
• Station 3: Getting in touch with convex lens
• Station 4: Finding the image formed in concave lens
• Station 5;Finding the image formed in convex lens
• Write your observations in your activity notebook
DISCUSSION OF THE OBSERVATIONS;

• 1. Differentiate concave lens and convex lens in terms

of their structure.
• 2.How will you describe the LOST of the image under
the concave and convex lens?
•Types of lense

DISCUSSION OF THE OBSERVATIONS;

• 1. Differentiate concave lens and convex lens in terms

of their structure.
• 2.How will you describe the LOST of the image under
the concave and convex lens?
1.COMPARE THE STRUCTURE OF THE TWO LENSES.
2.WHAT IS REPRESENTED BY F SYMBOL?
3.IN THE ACTIVITY WHERE YOU ABLE TO SEE THE IMAGE OF THE CANDLE IN
THE APPROPRIATE PRINCIPAL FOCUS?
GENERALIZATION:
LENSES ARE SMOOTHLY CURVED TRANSPARENT MATERIALS USUALLY MADE OF
PLASTIC OR GLASS. THEY HAVE ONE OR TWO SURFACES WHICH FORM A COMMON
BOUNDARY BETWEEN AN OPTICALLY DENSE MEDIUM AND A LESS DENSE ONE

• Convex/converging lens –has thinner edges thicker at the middle part

• -the parallel rays are refracted upon passing through the lens towards the
thicker part and converge on the other side
• Concave/ diverging lens – has thicker edges but thinner at the middle part
• -the parallel rays spread out or diverge extended shown by the broken
lines . They seem to meet at the common point
APPLICATION:

• Lenses are usually used as part of optical

instruments namely:
• Magnifying glass/lens * telescopes
• Cameras * microscopes
• Binoculars * eye glasses
EVALUATION:
• Tell whether convex or concave lens
• 1.called converging lens
• 2.has thinner edges than the middle part
• 3. called diverging lens
• 4. has thicker edges than the middle part
• 5,formed a virtual and erect image
