    1. INTRODUCTION

    • Garlic (Allium sativum L.) belongs to the family Alliacea


    and the most important bulb crop.
    • The origin of garlic is thought to be in central Asia (India,
    Afghanistan, west China, Russia).
    • garlic is one of the main Allium vegetable crop in the world
    and used as a seasoning in many foods throughout the
    globe.
    • Garlic is volatile and has sulfur combining compounds
    which is responsible for strong odor, its unique flavor and

    pungency as well as for healthful benefits.

    • Garlic has also medicinal value which is well recognized in

    the disease, diabetes, cancer.

    • Total area under cultivation in the world is 1,199,929 ha with


    total production of 17,674,893 tones (FAO, 2012).

    • In Ethiopia the total area under garlic production in 2009/2010


    reached 15,361.25 ha and the production is estimated to over
    179,657.8 tones (CSA, 2010).

    • Under the comparison of countries in garlic production, next
    to ten top garlic producers, China, India, South Korea, Egypt,
    Russia, Bangladesh, Burma, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, United
    states.

    • Ethiopia has placed number 12 in the world ranking and world


    share of Ethiopia in garlic exporting was very small amount
    only 0.7 % (FAOSTAT, 2013).

    •In Africa ,Ethiopia was the third in the area(10,690) after Egypt
    and Algeria, second in production but fourth in productivity with
    9.63 t/ ha which was far below Egypt (24.36 tone /ha), Kenya
    (23.87 t/ha ) and Niger (10.64 t/ha) in 2011(FAOSTAT,2013).

    •One of the major problems affecting crop production in Africa


    including Ethiopia is the rapid depletion of nutrients in
    smallholder farms.

    • In many garlic –producing areas, low availability of nutrients
    is the major factor limiting garlic production next to soil
    moisture stress.
    • According Diriba et al.,(2013) reported that garlic bulbs
    supplied with N,P and S improve bulb quality.

    1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

    •Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is one of the most important


    vegetable (bulbs) crop.

    •But the productivity both at the country and regional level is


    very low due to this poor agronomic practice mainly due to lack
    of integrate fertilizer application like NPS fertilizer.

    •The application of fertilizer by many small holder farmer
    considered as extra cost especially for vegetable, although Some
    farmers are use chemical fertilizer.

    • however the type of fertilizer restricted by DAP and urea only


    with the rate of application below or above the National blanket
    recommendation which is about 105KgN/ha and 92KgP/ha for
    garlic production (EIAR, 2007).

    • Recently the ministry of agriculture has introduced a new


    blend fertilizer containing N, P, and S but the application rate
    for garlic is not yet known.
    • Therefore, the aim of this study determine optimum rate of
    NPS blend fertilizer for the growth, yield and yield
    performance of garlic under Tulu Awullia.

    1.3. OBJECTIVES

    1.3.1. GENERAL OBJECTIVE


    •To investigate the effect of different NPS fertilizer rate on

    growth and yield of garlic.

    1.3.2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE


     To evaluate the response of garlic to different NPS

    fertilizer rate.
     To Known optimum rate of NPS fertilizer for garlic

    production at tulu awlia and similar agro ecology. 11


    3. MATERIAL AND METHOD
    3.1. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA
    •The experiment will be conducting at Mekdela Amba University

    College of Agricultures and Natural Resource (MAUAGR).

    •Department of Horticulture Demonstration Site Under rain fed

    and supplement with irrigation.

    •The area suited Amhara Region,North part of Ethiopia.It is

    located at 501 km north of Addis Ababa.it is found 39 0 00'N

    latitude and 11°00'E longitiude.

    • The altitude of the area is1500-3700 meter above sea

    level(m.a.s.l). The area receives annual rain fall 700-1200

    mm. The maximum and minimum temperature is 13oc and

    15oc respectively(CSA, 2008).

    3.2. Experimental Material

    • Healthy and uniform medium-sized cloves of garlic is used


    ( local variety) will be obtained from local market, will used
    as an experimental material.

    3.3. LAND PREPARATION


    •The land will be clear, plough (disk), level; large clods are broke
    down. Then remnant, stalks, non-decompose crop residues,
    weeds, and other unwanted materials are remove.

    •Then soil will be smooth and the land is plough and harrow to
    pulverize the soil. The field is then mark out into plots. 14
    3.4. Experimental design and Treatment
    •The experiment will be one factors namely 6 level of NPS
    blended fertilizer application rate (0, 50, 100,150, 200 and 200kg
    ha-1).

    • Based on agricultural transformation agency tentative


    fertilizer recommendation rate on the study area (Table 1).

    • The experiment will be lay out as a randomized complete


    block design (RCBD) with replicated three times.

    • Each plot consisted of five rows with 10cm between plants


    and 30 cm between rows. The two outer rows will be

    • The blocks will be separated by a 1 m wide open space
    whereas the plots within a block will be separated by a 0.5m
    wide space.

    • The treatment will be assigned to each plot randomly. The


    size of each plot will be 1.5 wide and 2 m long (3m 2). The
    total area of land will be 94.25 m2.

    • Healthy and uniform medium-sized local variety garlic cloves


    will be planted with each plot consists of 20 plant with 5
    rows , thus a total of 100 plants per plot. 16

    3.7. DATA ANALYSIS
    • Data collected will be subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA)

    appropriate to single factor experiment in RCBD manually

    •Interpretations will be made following the procedure described by Gomez

    and Gomez.

    •Whenever the effects of the treatments will be found significant, the means

    will be compared using least significance difference (LSD) test at 5% level of

    significance.

    •To determine simple relationship between yield and yield components as

    affected by rate of NPS fertilizer application.
