How does light travel?

22 Apr 2024

Complete the word search and glue it in.

1. Copy and complete: Light is a transverse/longitudinal wave. Light
travels in s________ l_______.
2. Draw a diagram showing how we see objects.
3. Stick in the square of paper that is opaque. Write a sentence
next to it explaining what opaque means.
4. Stick in the square of paper that is translucent. Write a
sentence next to it explaining what translucent means.
5. Stick in the square of paper that is tranparent. Write a sentence
next to it explaining what transparent means.
6. Explain how light waves are different from sound waves.
7. Explain how you know that light doesn’t bend, using an example
from this room.
8. Explain why you can’t see a table in the dark.

Write down the key word and corresponding definition.
Transmit • A substance which does not transmit
light.
Opaque • To let light through.

Absorb • A substance that transmits light

completely.

Transparent
• To stop light getting through.
1. What does luminous mean? (Use the word emit)
2. How do we see non-luminous objects? (Use the word reflect).
3. Copy the ray diagram X at the bottom of page 150. Label it
either transparent, translucent or opaque.
4. Copy the ray diagram Y at the bottom of page 150. Label it
either transparent, translucent or opaque.
5. Copy the ray diagram Z at the bottom of page 150. Label it
either transparent, translucent or opaque.
6. Copy the table on the right. Luminous Non-luminous
Sort the objects below it into
the two columns.
7. Read page 151. Explain what a
pinhole camera is.
8. Draw a diagram showing how a
pinhole camera works.

Reflection 22 Apr 2024
Write down the key word and corresponding definition.
Luminous • A material which does not transmit
light.
Opaque • An object that makes its own light.
• A material that transmits light
Translucent completely.
• A material that transmits light but
Transparent
scatters it, so the image is an outline.
Describe a plain mirror.
Smooth, shiny, flat, pale colour e.g. silver
What does it do?
Give clear true (virtual) images
How does it work? (think about properties of light!)
Reflect light rays evenly and in straight lines
Think, pair share…

Specular Diffuse
Smooth surfaces reflect light evenly Rough surfaces scatter the light so
so you see the image. can’t see the image.

Why is there a reflection in the first photo but not

the second?
Reflection 22 Apr 2024
Write down the key word and corresponding definition.

Reflect • Light is stopped and taken in.

Transmit • Light bounces off a surface.

• Light passes through a material.

Absorb

• Light is sent in different directions.

Scatter
Copy the paragraph and fill in the missing words

Reflection is what happens when a light wave hits a

surface.
Mirrors have very smooth, shiny surfaces which allows
each light ray to reflect off it at the same angle, giving a
clear reflection.
Rough surfaces look dull, because light is reflected back
in lots of different directions.

Bruno is investigating the properties of light in the lab.

(a)He shines a ray of light at a piece of paper. Explain why the paper
looks dull. (2 marks)

(b)Bruno replaces the paper with a mirror. It gives a clear reflection.

(i) What name is given to this kind of reflection? (1 mark)
(ii)He measures the angle of incidence of the ray of light on the
mirror as 39. What is the angle of reflection? (1 mark)
Answers

(a) Paper has a rough surface (1 mark), so light is reflected back in lots
of different directions (1 mark).
