Massive Open Online Course
Technologies have been advancing to the level where people
can reach various things easily, especially in education. Since
the start of the 21st century, educators continuously search for
alternatives to break the traditional way of teaching and
learning in this digital world. Of course, accessibility and
quality are prime importance to these alternatives. One and
probably the trendiest globally among these alternatives is the
Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).

What is MOOC?
 is an open access and an interactive way to facilitate

students’ online study.
 It can provide participants with course materials such as
videos, lectures and study materials.
 It is primarily an “online course” delivered over the
Internet to potentially an unlimited number of students at a
time
When did MOOC start?
 Canadian Educators, Stephen Downes and George

Siemens, developed an online course which offered freely
available online educational services called Connectivism
and Connective Knowledge in 2008. With this initiative,
Massive Open Online Course (MMOC) was created.
 In 2013, University of the Philippines-Open University
(UPOU) offered the first MOOC in the country.

What is cMOOC?
 A cMOOC emphasizes the connectivist philosophy. It is a

social platform for collaboratively sharing and building
knowledge within a community of people.
 The participants in a cMOOC take on the dual role of both
teacher and learner as they share information with each other
and engage in joint experiences and discussions.
 cMOOCs often contain content and promote interaction
through: Blogs, Learning communities, Social media platforms
What is xMOOC?
 stands for eXtended Massive Open Online Course.

 These MOOCs are based on traditional university courses.
 They significantly broaden the number of students who can
be exposed to university-level courses.
 The disadvantage: Critics argue that xMOOCs are inferior
to the university courses they mimic because they
eliminate teacher-student interactions and involve limited
student-student interactions.

Massive Open Online Content and its Implications
 Massive Open Online Content (MOOC) is defined by
Educause as a model for delivering learning content
online to any person who wants to take a course, with no
limit on attendance. It can be characterized by the
following:
A revolutionary approach to education that veers away from
the physical to the virtual.
A kind of learning that happens online, breaking the norm of
traditional schools or universities for higher education
Utilizes information technologies like analytics to help
instructors gauge their student’s learning.
Emphasis on connectedness.
 The Implications
By taking learning into virtual space, attendance is no longer a
determining factor in one’s education. This makes MOOC
learning a popular alternative for those whose life situations
make them unable to attend regular schools.
Managing MOOC is relatively cheaper than running
educational institutions. By taking out the experiences of
Universities – which are passed down to students in exorbitant
fees- MOOC addresses the high cost of education.
 The Implications
Analytic provides information about the learning process of
students. Through the use of data collected through analytic,
MOOC provides a means to improve learning.
Since it focuses on connectedness as part of the learning
process, MOOC allows education to take place on a global
scale. Connecting learners and instructors all over the world to
one another to maximize education.
