CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS

PREPARED BY:CHRISTEN ANN AMPARO

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion the participants must have:
*Identify the different plants based on key botanical characteristics.
*Practice collecting and preserving plant specimens for accurate classification.
*Foster appreciation for the diversity and importance of plant life in ecosystem.
KINGDOM PLANTAE
Most plants are autotrophs. They can make their own food
through the process of photosynthesis by harnessing energy
from the sun using their green coloring material called ,
chlorophyll , absorbing water and nutrients from the soil
through their roots , and capturing carbon dioxide from the
air through the openings in their leaves and stems.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Chlorophyll
NONVASCULAR
PLANTS
No special tissue for
transporting food and
water. Do not have true
roots, stems, and
leaves.
MOSSES – grow in wet and shady places
-found along riverbanks , in cracks between rocks , and on sides of trees
-form carpets of many tiny plants
-help in keeping soil formation and hydration
LIVERWORTS – grow along riverbanks
- bodies are either flat or made up
of very short with small caps on the end
-the caps contain reproductive
structures
-when structures fall on moist
ground , they grow into new plants
HORNWORTS –found in tropical forests
-they look like greasy blue green
patches
-in some places , they cover large
areas of soil or sides of trees
VASCULAR PLANTS
Have special tissues for
transporting food and water.
Have true roots , leaves ,
stems , and reproductive
organs.
VASCULAR TISSUES
XYLEM –carrieswater and minerals from the
roots up to the stems and leaves

PHLOEM – carries processed food from the

leaves to the other parts of plant
SPORE – BEARING PLANTS
- produces spores from one parent
plant
- Spores fertilize themselves and
develop into plants identical to
their parent

WHISK FERNS CLUB MOSSES

HORSETAILS FERNS
WHISK FERNS
-small plants with spore – bearing branches but
without true leaves or roots
CLUB MOSSES
-grow on the forest floor or branches of trees , with their spore
cases growing at the base of their small branches covered by scale-like
leaves
HORSETAILS
-grow in swampy places , with their spares
found at the tip of their bushy stems
FERNS
-mostly grow in tropical places
-can vary in size
-spare capsules are found at the back of their leaves
SEED – BEARING PLANTS
(SPERMATOPHYTES)

ANGIOSPERMS GYMNOSPERMS
ANGIOSPERMS
-flowering plants
-seeds are enclosed inside an ovary usually in a fruit
-lilies , orchids , agaves , roses , peas , sunflowers , oaks and maples
GYMNOSPERMS
-non-flowering or cone-bearing plants
-seeds are unenclosed or `NAKED`
-seeds are found on scales , leaves or as cones
-ginkgoes , pine , spruce , fir , conifers cycads
GINKGO TREE CONES GINKGO TREE
SPRUCE TREE CONES SPRUCE TREE
PINE TREE CONES PINE TREE
CYCADS
