shadow show known as
an eclipse.
There are two types of eclipses:
lunar and solar. During a lunar
eclipse, Earth’s shadow obscures
the Moon. During a solar eclipse,
the Moon blocks the Sun from
view.
Lunar Eclipses
• Lunar eclipses occur at the full moon phase.
• When Earth is positioned precisely between the
Moon and Sun, Earth’s shadow falls upon the
surface of the Moon, dimming it and sometimes
turning the lunar surface a striking red over the
course of a few hours.
• Each lunar eclipse is visible from half of Earth.
There are three types of lunar eclipses depending on
how the sun, Earth and moon are aligned at the time
of the event.
Total lunar eclipse: Earth's shadow is cast across
the entire lunar surface.
Partial lunar eclipse: During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the
moon enters Earth's shadow, which may look like it is taking a "bite"
out of the lunar surface.
Penumbral lunar eclipse: The faint outer part of Earth's shadow is cast across the lunar
surface. This type of eclipse is not as dramatic as the other two and can be difficult to see.
•During a total lunar eclipse, the
lunar surface turns a rusty red
color, earning the nickname "
blood moon". The eerie red
appearance is caused by sunlight
interacting with Earth's atmosphere
.
Solar Eclipses
Solar eclipse, the Moon coming between Earth and the Sun so that the Moon’s shadow sweeps over
Earth’s surface. This shadow consists of two parts: the umbra, a cone into which no direct sunlight
penetrates; and the penumbra, which is reached by light from only a part of the Sun’s disk.
1. Daylight is less in which season?
A. Summer
B. Winter
C. Neither summer nor winter
D. Both in summer and winter

Answer: b) Winter
2. Which happens in one year’s time?
A. The moon makes one complete revolution
around Earth.
B. Earth makes one complete revolution around
the sun.
C. Earth makes one complete spin on its axis.
D. The sun makes one complete spin on its axis.

ANSWER: B
3. Which of the following best describes why the Earth has
four seasons?
A.The sun is closer to the Earth during summer and farther
away during winter
B.The sun shines directly onto the equator all year long
C.The 23.5° tilt of the Earth is the primary reason for the
seasons

ANSWER: C
4. Why do we see different phases of the Moon here on
Earth?
A. The Moon moves around the sun
B. The Moon is smaller when it is farther from Earth
causing it to appear to have shadows.
C. The point of view of the moon changes and Earth
sees different amounts of lit and unlit moon.
D. The Earth casts a shadow across the moon.

ANSWER: C
5. A total eclipse occurs when the observer is within the
_____.
A. Antumbra
B. Umbra
C. Penumbra
D. None of the options

Answer: b) Umbra
Explanation: Umbra is the region where the total eclipse
takes place.
6. A Solar Eclipse happens when the
_______________ blocks the _________________.
A. Earth blocks the Sun.
B. Moon blocks the Earth.
C. Sun blocks the Moon.
D. Moon blocks the Sun.

Correct Answer :D. Moon blocks the Sun.

Explanation: A solar eclipse is when the Moon is between
the Earth and the Sun and casts its shadow on the Earth.
7. A Lunar Eclipse happens when the
_______________ blocks the _________________.
A.. Earth casts a shadow on the Sun.
B. Moon casts a shadow on the Earth.
C. Sun casts a shadow on the Moon.
D. Earth casts a shadow on the Moon

Correct Answer: D. Earth casts a shadow on the Moon

Explanation : A lunar eclipse is when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, and its
shadow is cast onto the moon.
