What is project management?

 Project is a unique , onetime operational


activity or effort.
 Project management is the process of
planning, organizing, and managing tasks
and resources to accomplish a defined
objective, usually within limitations on
time, resources, or cost

 Made up of individuals from various areas and
department within a company
 Matrix organization: a team structure with
members from functional areas depending on
the skill required.
 Project Planning
A Statement of Work : a description of goals,
work and time frame of project
 An Activity: the performance of individual job
or work that requires labour, resources and
time and that is subject to management
control or supervision.

Work Breakdown Structure
 WBS is a method for project planning.
 A project is broken down into its major
compenent, referred to as modules, then
subdivided into detailed subcomponents
which are into activities and finally
individual task.
The project triangle
 Time: The time to complete the project as
reflected in your project schedule.
 Money: The project budget, based on the
cost of the resources, that is, the people,
equipment, and materials required to do
the tasks.
 Scope: The goals and tasks of the project
and the work required to complete them.
Project strategy
 Objectives. The goals and outcomes of the
project must be clearly understood.
 Assumptions. If you're making any assumptions
that support the goals and successful outcome
of the project, these assumptions need to be
specified ahead of time.
 Limitations. Any limiting factors or project
constraints should be spelled out. Identifying
limits and constraints can also help you plan
contingencies for potential problems.
 Scope. The scope defines the tasks and
deliverables of the project.
