Mobile Network and Wireless

Technologies
Mr. Seaton
What is a Mobile Network?

 A mobile network is a communication network the last link is wireless.

 The network is distributed over land areas called cells; each served by at
least one fixed-location known as base station.
 The base station provides the cell with the network coverage which can be
used for transmission of voice, data and other forms of media.
Generations of mobile technology
1G Technology

1G refers to the first generation of

wireless telephone technology AMPS was first to launch 1G
which was first introduced in the mobile systems in the USA.
1980s.

Its speed was up to 2.4kbps. 1G network used analog signal.

Weaknesses of 1G Technology

Poor
Poor Voice Large Phone Limited
No Security Handoff
Quality Size Capacity
Reliability
2G Technology

 The technologies used in 2G are either TDMA (Time Division Multiple

Access) which divides signal into different time slots.
 Or CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) which allocates to each user so as
to communicate over a multiplex physical channel.
2G Technology
 It was launched in Finland in the
year 1991.
 2G networks use digital signals.
 Its data speeds were up to 64kbps.
 It provides better quality and
capacity.
 It enables services such as text
messages, picture messages and
MMS.
Its’s unable to handle complex data such as videos

It is very slow.

Weaknesses of 2G Technology
2.5G Technology

 2.5G technology are technology between 2nd and 3rd generation of mobile
cellular Technology. 2.5G technology sometimes described as 2G cellular
technology combined with GPRS.
 It includes come extra features with 2G like email, web browsing, camera.
 Speed 64-144kbps.
3G Technology

 3G technology was introduced in the 2000s.

 Data transmission speed increased (144kbps – 2Mbps)
 Advanced developers can also develop apps for mobile, IM and video
chatting as 3G supports all these and much more.
 3G is a preferred platform for many popular mobile games.
 Developers can use this network to create maps and positioning services.

Drawbacks of 3G Technology
4G Technologies

 4G offers very good technologies for advanced mobile services such as video
and movie streaming. This offered much higher speeds than 3G and WIFI.
 Data transfer rate is 100Mbps.
 Ultra Broadband internet service
 It has a bandwidth of 100MHz
 Download speed 14Mps
 Business users are more likely to use 4G because it offers more security than
WIFI.
Completely wireless communication with
almost no limitations.

5G
Technology Launched in the year 2020.

Faster data transmission than all

previous generations

High speed and high capacity.

 Hotspot
Wireless Network Technologies

 Computer networks Transmit data through many different wireless means

including:
 WIFI
 Bluetooth
 Hotspot
WIFI

 Wi-Fi is the radio signal sent from a wireless router to a nearby

device, which translates the signal into data you can see and use.
 The device transmits a radio signal back to the router, which
connects to the internet by wire or cable.
 The term WIFI stands for wireless fidelity.
Bluetooth

 Bluetooth, developed in the late 1990s, is a technology designed to enable

short-range wireless communication between electronic devices, such as
between a laptop and a smartphone or between a computer and a television.
 Bluetooth works by using radio frequencies, rather than the infrared
spectrum used by traditional remote controls. As a result, Bluetooth
eliminates the need not only for a wire connection but also for maintaining a
clear line of sight to communicate between devices.
Hotspot

 WIFI hotspots are internet access points that allow you

to connect to a WIFI network using your computer,
smartphone or another device while away from your
home or office network.
