What is a voice in grammar?

It is form of a verb indicating the relation


between the participants in a narrated event (
subject, object) and the event itself.

There are two types of


voice:
✖ Active voice
✖ Passive voice

Active voice
➔ The subject act upon its verb.
➔ The subject performs the action denoted by the verb.
➔ The agent is always shown here.
➔ People generally tend to use active voice.
➔ Examples:
● My mother will cook dinner tonight.
● She wrote the letter to me.
● Sheena is going to do her homework.

Passive voice
➔ A subject is a recipient of a verbs action.
➔ The object of a corresponding active sentence becomes a
subject.
➔ Agent is usually not mentioned here.
➔ Example:
● My homework was done.
● The food will be cooked tonight.
● Her homework is going to be done.

Converting active voice into passive
Active: Mahesh holds a book.
Subject V1 Object

Passive: A book is held by Mahesh.


Subject V3 Object.
✖ In the active voice, Mahesh was the subject and book was the
object
✖ But in passive voice, book has become the subject and Mahesh is
the object.
Exercises:
Convert the following sentences as indicated.
1. I did not beat her.
2. I will never forget this experience.
3. Mother made a cake yesterday.
4. The boy teased the girl.
5. Did she do her duty?
6. The tiger was chasing the deer.
7. She has written a novel.
8. She has learned her lessons.
9. Have you finished the report?
10. The police have caught the thief.
