Elements of a

Plot
Myth
A myth is an ancient story created to explain
natural events. Gods ,goddesses, and heroes are
among the characters in myth. In addition, to
explain events in nature, some myths also present a
lesson to live, or serve as a warning to follow
society’s rules.
Plot
A plot is the chain of events that
make up your story. It has five
elements; Exposition, Rising
Action, Climax, Falling Action, and
Resolution.
 Exposition is a literary term that deals with how to start a story.
 Conflict is a necessary element in any story. Before we dive
deeper into the purpose of conflict, here’s the standard
definition of conflict, regardless of the medium you choose to
express it.
 The rising action in a story moves the plot toward the climax
through a series of progressively more complicated events and
decisions by the main character or characters, leading up to a
final decision of great significance.
 Theclimax of a plot is the story's central turning point—the moment of
peak tension or conflict—which all the preceding plot developments have
been leading up to.
 The falling action of a story is the section of the plot following the climax
, in which the tension stemming from the story's central conflict decreases
and the story moves toward its conclusion.
 Thedénouement or Resolution is the final section of a story's plot, in
which loose ends are tied up, lingering questions are answered, and a
sense of resolution is achieved. The shortest and most well known
dénouement, it could be said, is "And they lived happily ever after."
Setting, and
Characterizatio
n
Directions: Identify whether the following is part of
the story’s plot, setting, or characters. Write the
answer to the space before the number.
1.) Buzz and Woody
2) Andy is going to the university and leaving Woody
behind.
3) In a small village in America
4) Andy and Bonnie
5) Woody realized that Andy needs to go.
In reading stories and watching movies, we
have to analyze the many elements that go
with every story. These are the setting, plot,
characters, style, theme, point of view, and
tone. Understanding all of these may make
you feel bombarded with so many problems.
Setting
includes the time and place in which the story will be
taking place.
It includes locations, cities or countries or planets, era
or age, time of day, and cultural milieu. Setting answers
the questions where and when.
In addition, setting enhances the development of a
story’s plot and characters by providing a distinct
background.
Examples
Ancient Greece Bacolod
Dark Ages Faraway kingdom
Industrial Konoha Village
Revolution Beach
Middle Ages Mountain, etc.
Philippines
Characters
This pertains to the people (or sometimes animals or
objects) who are featured in a story.
When we speak of characters, we also identify the good
character or the protagonist and the character against
him who is the antagonist.
Knowing both of them is just like understanding the
good and evil characters.
Examples
Olaf Edna Mode
Elsa The minions
Luffy Wednesday Addams
Elizabeth Bennet Wolverine
Hercules
Optimus Prime
Plot
This is the whole of the events of the story. This is
the action (action includes dialogue), the part of
the story that answers the question of what
happened. In analyzing the plot deeper, we need
to look into the Freytag’s Pyramid which was
devised by the German novelist, Gustav Freytag,
in 1863.
Example
 Four kids travel through a wardrobe to the land of Narnia
and learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of a
mystical lion- Narnia, the Lion , the With and the Wardrobe
 The story centers on the relationship between two sisters who
are princesses, Elsa and Anna. Elsa has magical powers to
freeze objects and people, which she does not know how to
control.- Disney’s Frozen
 the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the
Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos'
actions and restore balance to the universe.- Avengers:
Endgame
