Introduction to Vedic Astrology
Vedic astrology is a fairly recent term that came about in the 20th century when Hindu philosophies
regained popularity in the West. The original term is “Jyotish” which literally translates to “the light of
God”. Jyotish is derived from the Vedas and is also considered the eye of the Vedas. It provides the
guiding light to help one fulfil one’s destiny effectively.

What sets Vedic astrology apart?

Ayanamsha/Precession
Vedic astrology is based on impeccable precision. It takes into consideration not only the planetary
movements but also the minutest shift in the movement of Earth in the ecliptic plane. This translates
to a difference of one degree every 72 years. The precision of Vedic astrology is achieved by
accounting for “precession”, also known as ayanamsha. This is the distinct difference in Vedic and
Western astrology. Western astrology does not take precession into account in its calculations.

Yoga & Calculation

There are different types of Yogas in the Panchang. Yogas depend on the
placement of planets with respect to each other and their relative placement in
different zodiac signs. There are 27 Yogas and each Yoga's span is 13°20',
making a total of 360°.

To calculate the Yoga:

1. Add the longitudes of the Moon & Sun
2. If the sum is greater than 360°, subtract 360° from the sum.
3. Divide the resultant sum by 13°20’.
4. Quotient gives the number of Yogas elapsed and quotient + 1 gives the
current Yoga. The remainder gives the degrees elapsed in the current Yoga.
