Background of the study
 As technology advanced exponentially, artist creations are now evolving and deal with
virtual platforms that help expand their imagination and think of infinite possibilities that
may be used to introduce other existing art forms. With this, it’s interesting to observe the
arising connection between humans and technology that changes the meaning and
understanding of the body. When putting our body on a screen setting, especially a dancing
body, there are certain boundaries to consider in order to make the action much visible to
the spectator’s point of view. On-screen performance, there are three frames to consider
the actual body, camera works, and virtual spectators, which is important to understand
how the body is enabled to react in between transitioned spaces, given the fact that it was
intangible and has two-dimensional facing on screen, and can only capture limited
execution of movements. However, compared to live performance, there is a realistic
figure of the body that has a direct impact on the audience, while in screen performance,
there is a challenge on how to use the screen body in imparting meanings effectively. Both
live and screen settings had a different approach in presenting space and body, which is
good to experiment and understand. This research will explore the concept of screen dance
as a movement-based artform through choreographic process that engage dancers body.
Research Objective:

- This study aims to understand the difference between corporeal body and the
screen body.

- To know how screen dance navigates body movements.

- A practice-based research investigating the transformative effect that shaped

dancer’s physical mood and experience upon embodying process.

-To produce a dance choreography with a hybrid of dance film and video mapping.
Research question:

- How screen dancing gave me a tool to choreograph?

- What is the impact of screen setting in a dancing body?

- Does a dancer’s practice changes when they were engage in a screen

performance?
Operational Framework

Phase 1- for this phase, the researcher will do an experimental dance exploration /
improvisation to deeply understand the concept of screen dance.

Phase 2- In this phase, the researcher will start to choreograph based on the explored
movements and will write a journal entry.

Phase 3- A creative process which include teaching the dance choreography, rehearsal and
interview about the participants experience

Phase 4- Final production, and assessment

Screen Dance Concept
 To discuss the concept of screen dance, According to Rosenberg2012, “The
screendance is a literal construction of a choreography that lives
only as it is rendered in either film, video or digital
technologies.” Also, he defined that screen dance is a movement-based artform
wherein the movement itself is not necessarily defined by the moving subject alone, but it
also includes the movement of the camera, frames and editing process and the
relationship between the movement and sound or the absence of it. In short, every
tools /devices that is available in the making process is all part of screen dance and can
create a choreography.
Definitions
Embody- be an expression of or give a tangible or visible form to (an idea, quality, or
feeling).
Corporeal body- having, consisting of, or relating to a physical material body: not
spiritual
Methodology

 The study of “Embodying the dance for the screen: A dancer’s

approach to understanding the process of choreographing
screen-dance” is a practice based research that observed the
process how a dancer engage his/herself in understanding the
concept of screen dance through the use of choreography.
Methods

Data collection
For collecting data, I will use journal entries and archival researches, such as video recording,
photo, and documentaries coming from the process of exploring and choreographing a screen
dance.

 Data Gathering tool

This study will use interview, and dance improvisation.
Procedures

 Data sources:
The data will be gathered through journals, interviews, and documentation.

 Ethical consideration:
The researcher will notify and informed the participants before conducting an interview in the
study. The researcher will provide a consent letter approved by the professor to give an
assurance to the respondent. The researcher will not include any information in any report
that would make it possible to identify the participants. The research participants were also
given the option to which data will be included in the study.
