Background of the study
As technology advanced exponentially, artist creations are now evolving and deal with
virtual platforms that help expand their imagination and think of infinite possibilities that
may be used to introduce other existing art forms. With this, it’s interesting to observe the
arising connection between humans and technology that changes the meaning and
understanding of the body. When putting our body on a screen setting, especially a dancing
body, there are certain boundaries to consider in order to make the action much visible to
the spectator’s point of view. On-screen performance, there are three frames to consider
the actual body, camera works, and virtual spectators, which is important to understand
how the body is enabled to react in between transitioned spaces, given the fact that it was
intangible and has two-dimensional facing on screen, and can only capture limited
execution of movements. However, compared to live performance, there is a realistic
figure of the body that has a direct impact on the audience, while in screen performance,
there is a challenge on how to use the screen body in imparting meanings effectively. Both
live and screen settings had a different approach in presenting space and body, which is
good to experiment and understand. This research will explore the concept of screen dance
as a movement-based artform through choreographic process that engage dancers body.
Research Objective:
- This study aims to understand the difference between corporeal body and the
screen body.
-To produce a dance choreography with a hybrid of dance film and video mapping.
Research question:
Phase 1- for this phase, the researcher will do an experimental dance exploration /
improvisation to deeply understand the concept of screen dance.
Phase 2- In this phase, the researcher will start to choreograph based on the explored
movements and will write a journal entry.
Phase 3- A creative process which include teaching the dance choreography, rehearsal and
interview about the participants experience
Data collection
For collecting data, I will use journal entries and archival researches, such as video recording,
photo, and documentaries coming from the process of exploring and choreographing a screen
dance.
Data sources:
The data will be gathered through journals, interviews, and documentation.
Ethical consideration:
The researcher will notify and informed the participants before conducting an interview in the
study. The researcher will provide a consent letter approved by the professor to give an
assurance to the respondent. The researcher will not include any information in any report
that would make it possible to identify the participants. The research participants were also
given the option to which data will be included in the study.
