Our objectives:

• To study traditional myths and legends and

understand why ancient people believed in them.

• To look at what ingredients myths and legends

include, and use these to create our own ‘myths’.
Myth
A myth is a traditional story that is not based on something
that really happened and is usually about a superhuman
being or hero.

Legend
A legend is like a myth, but is usually based on someone or
something that did exist.

What traditional stories can you think of? Put them in a

mindmap. Can you tell whether they are myths or legends?
Myths

The most famous myths are those of the Ancient Greeks.

These are stories that tell of Gods with power over all
aspects of the world, including love, thunder and war.

It is said that the stories of how these Gods use their powers
were made up to help explain things that people didn’t
understand – like why the rain falls, or why the seasons
change.

Sometimes myths also try to teach a moral lesson, where a

character in the story does something that is morally wrong
or bad, and they have to suffer the consequences.
Pandora’s Box

This story tells of how the Gods punish mankind after they
steal fire from heaven. They put everything evil into a jar
and leave it with a man called Epimetheus and his wife.

Listen to the story of ‘Pandora’s Box’ and write a sentence

explaining what moral lesson it tries to teach the reader.

Imagine you have a magic box.

What would you keep in it?
Write a short story telling what would
happen if someone opened it
(try to include a moral lesson of your own!).

The Minotaur

One of the most famous monsters from a myth is the

minotaur. This creature was a half-human,
half-bull that lived at the centre of a large
labyrinth (maze).

Listen to the description of the

minotaur and fill in a chart like
the one below:

SIZE / SHAPE
SKIN
HEAD
HAIR
TEETH
Now use a similar chart to plan your own monster. Once
you’ve planned it, draw and describe it in the same way:

SIZE / SHAPE
SKIN
HEAD
HAIR
TEETH
TAIL
CLAWS
EYES
SMELL
SOUND
Hercules

This is a picture of Hercules from

the Disney movie. In the original
Greek story, Hercules is supposed
to be an old man, but for their film,
Disney decided to make him look
more like a modern hero.

Label your picture of Hercules to

show how the artist has made him
look more heroic.
