 Causes of electrical fire safety in construction
INTRODUCTION
 Electrical fires pose significant risks in civil engineering construction due to the
complexity of electrical installations, the transient nature of construction work, and
the presence of various combustible materials. Ensuring electrical fire safety in
construction sites is essential for protecting workers, equipment, and the overall
integrity of a project. This report highlights the importance of electrical fire safety,
common causes of electrical fires, safety practices, regulations, and preventive
measures that must be adhered to on construction sites.
 Electrical fire safety is a paramount concern in civil engineering construction,
where the combination of temporary power sources, complex electrical
installations, and the presence of flammable materials significantly increases the
risk of fire outbreaks.
LITERATURE SURVEY
 NFPA 241: A standard developed by the National Fire Protection Association that outlines
strategies to mitigate fire risk on construction sites.

 The Fire Protection Association: Offers a construction site fire safety plan document that can be
obtained from their website .

 Some ways to reduce fire risk on construction sites include:

Controlling the amount of combustible material in the work area Storing combustible materials
outside buildings under construction Controlling ignition sources Keeping equipment away from
open fires or hot work Creating a designated cooking area that is not near combustible materials

 The Fire Protection Association : Ben Franklin is known as the
father of fire protection engineering.

 Here are some other notable figures in the history of fire safety:
Emperor Nero: Wanted cities to be built with space for egress
and to control fires.

 Howard Wilson Emmons: A Harvard professor who is

considered the father of modern fire science

 Armour Institute of Technology: In 1903, this institute launched

the first-degree program in fire protection engineering Some
other factors that contributed to the growth of fire protection
engineering include: The Institution of Fire Engineers was
established in the UK in 1918. The Society of Fire Protection
Engineers was established in the US in 1950.

Final Year Project 2019-20 5

 The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published the Fire Safety in
Construction guidance document, HSG168, to help reduce the risk of fire
on construction sites.

 The guide provides ways to reduce hazards and risks by taking proactive
measures to control ignition and combustion.

 Other resources for construction fire safety include:

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety)Order 2005 and the CDM
Regulations2015: These set out the law on construction site fire safety.

 NFPA 241: A standard developed by the National Fire Protection

Association that outlines strategies to mitigate fire risk on construction
sites.

Electrical fire risk in construction

Electrical system on construction site are subjected to various challenges

 Temporary power supply

 Improper wiring

 Overloaded circuit

 Damaged cables

 Combustible materials

7
 Causes of electrical fire safety in construction

 Faulty Wiring and Equipment :- Inadequate or improperly installed wiring can lead
to short circuits, overheating, eventually, fires.

 Electrical overload :- Excessive demand on electrical circuits or improper

distribution of electrical loads can cause overheating and fires.

 Lack of Grounding :- Improper grounding of electrical equipment can lead to shock

hazards and increase the risk of fire.

 Use of defective equipment :- Using faulty or substandard electrical equipment

such as plugs, switches, and extension cords is a major fire risk.

 Human error and negligence :- Workers might accidentally damage cables,

improperly connect circuits, or fail to notice faults in electrical systems.

8
 OBJECTIVES OF FIRE SAFETY

 Protect Protect people: The main goal of fire safety is to protect lives by preventing
fires, quickly responding to fires, and safely evacuating people from buildings.

 Protect property: Fire safety also aims to protect buildings, equipment, materials,
documents, data, and information.

 Prevent fires: Fire prevention is an important part of fire safety.

 Limit damage: The goal of fire safety is to limit the damage caused by fire.

 Maintain continuity of operations: Fire safety also aims to maintain continuity of

operations during and after a fire.

 Protect people and property: Prevent fires, reduce the risk of injury, and limit
property damage.
