Objectives:

● Conduct an investigation to
determine if plants can grow
without soil.
ENGAGE: (Do now!)
What do plants need to grow well?

• Room to grow
• Water
• Nutrients from the soil
• Light
• Carbon dioxide and oxygen from the air

Do you think plants could grow without soil?

Yes! Growing plants using hydroponics is growing them

without soil.

depth explanation on what hydroponics is

EXPLORE: Carry out the investigation

How can you grow

plants without soil?

own hydroponics system

EVALUATE: (EXIT TICKET)

INFER What would happen if you put the plant in a dark

closet? Why?

Either the plant will not grow or it will wither and

lose its green color, because it needs sunlight for
photosynthesis.
EVALUATE: (EXIT TICKET)

ANALYZE: What are the main parts of a

hydroponics system? How is matter such as water
and air transported into, out of, and within the
system?

The main parts of a hydroponics system are the plant,

the water with nutrients, and the light source. The
plant takes in water and carbon dioxide. Light energy
is used to change these materials into sugar and
oxygen. Oxygen is given off by the plant. Sugar is
used by the plant as a source of energy.
Lesson Summary
● Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants using a
water-based nutrient solution rather than soil
● The main parts of a hydroponics system are the plant, the
water with nutrients, and the light source.
