CIRCLE AND ITS ARCS

Simplify the
following:

1. = 30
What can you say about the figure?
Do you think you can
easily move heavy objects
from one place to another or
travel to distant places as fast
as you can?
What difficulty do you
think would you experience
without circles?
Have you ever thought of
the importance of circles in
the field of transportation,
industries, sports, navigation,
carpentry, and in your daily
life?
CIRCLE
 “circle” comes from the Greek word “Kirkos”
which means ring
 It is a set of an infinite number of points
equidistant from a fixed point called a center.

 The CENTER as a point can be used to name the

circle
Objectives:
1. Recall the definition of a circle and its
part.
2. Recall terminologies related to a circle.
3. Identify the relations among chords, arcs,
central angles, and inscribed angles

3. The distance around a circle or
the length of a Circumference
circle.

• The major segment is the
segment where the arc length is
greater than half the circumference
of the circle

DEGREE MEASURE OF AN ARC
1. The degree measure of a minor arc is the measure
of the central angle which intercepts the arc.
Example: In ⦿P
LPU is a central angle. LU is an intercepted arc.
If m LPU =120, then mLU =120 120°
120°
DEGREE MEASURE OF AN ARC
2. The degree measure of a semicircle is 180°

Example: In ⦿P
If is diameter, then mSLU =180
and mUXS =180
DEGREE MEASURE OF AN ARC
3. The degree measure of a major arc is equal to
360° minus the measure of the minor arc with
the same endpoints.
Example: In ⦿P
If mLU =120, then mUXL =360 -mLU 120°

mUXL = 360-120
mUXL = 240
THE ARC ADDITION POSTULATE
The measure of the arc formed by two
adjacent arcs is the sum of the measures
of the two arcs.
Example: Given mNE=75 and mEJ=45, fi nd
mNJ and mJMN
M
Using Arc Addition Postulate N

mNJ = mNE + mEJ O

= 75 + 45

mNJ = 120
J
THE ARC ADDITION POSTULATE

Let us find now the measure of mJMN

The degree measure of a circle is 360.

mJMN = 360 - mNJ

= 360-120 M

mJMN = 240

How about the measure

of Arc GF?
 130°
Let’s Try!
Find the measure of arc FG, arc DE, arc DC
Find the measure of arc FG
Solution
mFG = 180-(mDE+mEF)
=180-(90+74)
=180-164
mFG= 16
Let’s Try!
Find the measure of arc DE

Solution:
mDE = 90°
Right angles measure 90
degrees.
Let’s Try!
Find the measure of arc DC

Solution:
mDC= (180-mBG)/2
=(180-82)/2
=98/2
mDC =49
