Methods
The project team has 20 members which all are post
graduate Adult health nursing, maternity and RH and
pediatrics nursing students.
We used different tools to obtain situational data.
The first tool was structured questionnaire for the
interview of hospital nursing management, head
midwife nurses, staff midwife nurses, patients and
cleaners.
11/11/2024 24
cont…

The questionnaire includes human resource

management, system of nursing service delivery
model, nursing care standard, inter-professional
relationship, prevention of occupational injuries
and communication.

11/11/2024 25
cont…

 The second tool we used was a checklist for

observational data in pediatrics wards which is
used to obtain data which can’t be effectively
retrieved from the interviews and we have also
reviewed patient chart.

11/11/2024 26

 The questionnaire includes human resource

management, system of nursing service delivery
model, nursing care standard, inter-professional
relationship, prevention of occupational injuries
and communication.

cont…

After the collection of the data problems were

identified and prioritized accordingly then after
performing SWOT analysis and action plan which
was designed to intervene and take corrective
measure on the prioritized problems.
The data was collected in Black Lion (Tikur
Anbessa) Specialized Hospital from October 11 -
16/2024 G C.
11/11/2024 28
Operational definitions:

 Inadequate medical equipment:

when there is low availability of equipment

that are carry out nursing activities required
that are use full in the Pediatrics ward like
vital sign equipment (thermometer, BP cuff),
screening.
11/11/2024 29
cont…
 Poor quality of toilet: means uncleaned and
undifferentiated room for staffs and patients, not
water facilities for hand washing.
 In adequate nurses: less number of nurses related
to patient flow to provide optimal care but the
standard is 1 nurse to 5 patients (7).

5. SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS
5.1. Planning

The hospital has a strategic plan which is related to nursing. The Oby-gyne
ward has a no specific plan for 2016 EC by itself but the hospital has general,
academic and clinical service annual plan the clinical service plan encompasses
nursing, midwifery and laboratory services; the plan preparation has not been
discussed with staff members despite sharing after plan has been made. The
ward planned to improve its performance by 10% from the last year. They have
planned to achieve 90% verbal and written communication about patient /client
care, 90% nursing process implementation and implementing nursing/midwifery
all shift regular round and etc... Regarding the achievement of last year plan, she
said that they have achieved all their plans more than 82.5% in all components
in the first quarter year.

11/11/2024 31
cont…

When asked about the factors influencing plan achievement, she mentioned resource
constraint in both consumable and human resources.

The only source of financial resource for the ward is direct government budgeting.
The ward will not get any financial resource in monetary terms. The whole financial
function of the hospital is controlled by the finance department of the hospital and the
nurse manager implied that the each ward plans for its budgeting in written form and
submits to the directorate and there is no nurse involved in budgeting in budget
recruitment process but accept the centralized budgeting and when asked about why
she said it was policy we cant change it and finally expressed that there is no
adequate budgeting .

She explained that there are many supplies and equipment’s that are lacking for the
ward operation and example medical record I care format standards including online
nursing and midwifery assessment that will be making their job easier to monitor and

11/11/2024 33
