Introduction
Professionalism is the foundation upon which successful careers and
organizations are built. In today's competitive and ever-changing
world, professionals are expected to uphold high standards of
conduct, ethics, and excellence in their respective fields. This
presentation aims to explore the concept of professionalism, its
characteristics, and the responsibilities and expectations associated
with being a true professional.
Profession
A profession is an occupation that requires
specialized knowledge, skills, and training acquired
through formal education and practical experience.
Professions are characterized by a distinct body of
knowledge, a code of ethics, and a service motive
that puts the interests of clients or the public above
personal gain.
 Professional
A professional is an individual who has received
specialized training and education in a particular field
and possesses the necessary qualifications, skills, and
expertise to practice that profession. Professionals
are expected to adhere to a set of ethical standards
and maintain a high level of competence in their
respective domains.
Characteristics of a Professional
Professionals are distinguished by several key characteristics:- Competence and
expertise: Professionals possess a deep understanding and mastery of their
field, continually updating their knowledge and skills.- Ethical conduct:
Professionals uphold a strict code of ethics, maintaining integrity, honesty, and a
commitment to serving the best interests of their clients or the public.-
Commitment to continuous learning: Professionals embrace lifelong learning
and seek opportunities for professional development to remain up-to-date with
the latest developments in their field.- Service orientation: Professionals
prioritize serving their clients or the public, putting their needs and well-being
above personal gain or self-interest.- Accountability: Professionals take

Professionalism
Professionalism is the skill, competence, and
character expected of a professional. It encompasses
the attitudes, behaviors, and qualities that define a
true professional, including ethical conduct,
accountability, excellence, and a commitment to
continuous learning and development.
 Criteria for Professionalism
• Professional Associations: Establish standards, enforce ethical codes, promote professionals' interests. Offer development
opportunities and act as a collective voice.
• Formal Education and Training: Requires specialized knowledge acquired through accredited degree or certification
programs
• Code of Ethics: Governed by principles, values, and conduct standards outlined in a code of ethics to maintain integrity
and public trust.
• Licensing or Certification: Demonstration of competence and adherence to standards through required licenses or
certifications.
• Continuous Learning: Commitment to ongoing professional development, education, and staying updated with
advancements.
• Self-Regulation: Mechanisms like peer review, disciplinary procedures, and oversight bodies for maintaining standards.

As professionals, individuals are expected to uphold certain responsibilities to maintain
professionalism:- Adhering to ethical and legal standards: Professionals must act with integrity,
honesty, and in accordance with the ethical codes and legal regulations governing their
profession.- Maintaining confidentiality: Professionals must protect the privacy and
confidentiality of clients or sensitive information entrusted to them.- Continuous professional
development: Professionals are responsible for staying up-to-date with the latest knowledge,
skills, and best practices in their field through ongoing learning and professional development
activities.- Delivering quality services: Professionals must strive to provide high-quality services
that meet or exceed the expectations of their clients or stakeholders.- Accountability to
