Who is Adolf Hitler?
Adolf Hitler was borm in Austria in 1889, Adolf
Hitler rose to power in German Politics as leader
of the National Socialist German Workers Prty,
also known as the Nazi Party. Hitler was a
chancellor of Germany from 1993 to 1945, and
served as dictator from 1934 to 1945. His policies
precipitated World War II and the Holocaust.
BACKGROUND AND
DISCOVERY OF THE DIARIES

West German magazine called Stern announced that

it had acquired a series of diaries allegedly written by
Adolf Hitler between 1932 and 1945. These diaries
were said to have been found in the wreckage of a
plane that crashed in East Germany at the end of
World War II. Stern claimed the diaries were obtained
from an anonymous source, who had smuggled them
out of East Germany over several years.
AUTHENTICATION AND
SKEPTICISM
Before publishing, Stern had the diaries examined
by several experts, including historians and
handwriting analysts. The historian Hugh Trevor-
Roper (later Lord Dacre), who had written
extensively about Hitler, was initially convinced of
their authenticity after a brief examination. Other
historians and experts began to question the
diaries' authenticity, noting inconsistencies in the
content, language, and style.
HOW WAS THE FORGERY
DISCOVERED?
Their analysis conclusively proved that the
diaries were modern forgeries. The ink used in
the diaries was found to be of a type that had
only been available since the 1950s. The forger
was soon identified as Konrad Kujau, a notorious
dealer in Nazi memorabilia. Kujau had fabricated
the diaries himself, filling them with information
and entries that were often plagiarized from
existing historical works.
AFTERMATH AND IMPACT

The revelation that the Hitler Diaries were fake

was a massive embarrassment for Stern and all
the experts who had endorsed their authenticity.
The scandal highlighted the risks of
sensationalism in journalism and the importance
of rigorous verification processes, especially when
dealing with historical documents of such
significance.
